Scrap prices

Yesterday was a nice day and I got the itch to do a little spring cleaning. I took my scrap tin to recyclers. Last time I took them a metal shed weighing 700# I got $6. I just wanted to clean things up yesterday, tired of looking at the mess. I was hoping to make gas money. Well my tin weighed 720# and this time I made $40. Before the prices crashed, the most I got was a penny a pound for junk tin, 720# would have brought $72.

Today the scrap yard was extremely busy and full of scrap. At the low, the scrap yard had no business and no scrap.

So is China buying scrap again?

What is scrap tin bringing in your area?

In my day, 720 pounds at a penny a pound would have brought you $7.20 but then I am not used to the new math. Just kidding Geo.

I stopped over Tuesday to ask if they knew what those two Ford F250s that I have would weigh. He asked if I wanted to sell them. He got out the calculator and said they should bring me around $400-450 each.

2 years ago I made contact with a local scrap buyer. Told him I had some scrap tin, iron, copper wiring etc. Knowing that prices were down, I offered it to him for free. Just come and get it. I'll even help load it. He declined. All of my junk is still here.

That was a very nice polite way of all most bulling some one. Its a good day to go and look at a tractor

You are right, my bad. Highest price was $200 ton, $.10 #. Yesterday $.058#.
Many years ago lucky to get a penny a #, $20 a ton.

Nothing wrong with correcting a math mistake. Thanks George

You are right, the key word is polite, and I thank everyone for being polite. That is how we should all treat each other even when we have different opinions. Politeness

I took a small load of stuff in yesterday. Iron was $120/ton. Copper was $1.90/LB. I got just under $40 for about half a pickup box load.

Does it still hold true that the closer you are to a port the higher the price paid, because they don't have to haul it so far?

If they're paying good money for scrap inland, it's likely going to domestic buyers not overseas.

I've been cleaning up my parents home place for my mom to sell out. A local scrap outfit has been delivering big bins and hauling them out when full. We've been getting about 6 cents per pound. I'm happy with it because I don't have to haul it.

That litty bitty dot caused the IRS to charge me 68,000.00 additional taxes, a couple years ago. I got that straightened out real quick. Their fault. Stan

Sold this morning at 110 a ton for tin.
Better than the last load i asked the guy if i would have enough to stop at McDonald's he said sure as long as you use the dollar menu.

Mainland China industry tend to shutdown for a month at Lunar New Year, 2 weeks before is scrap price drop time, end of order time to get delivery in 2 weeks for some toys and electronics, appliances. Last week of Chinese Lunar new year is about the time orders stacked up are looked at, some projections of material needs and work schedule rough figured- this is about the time scrap prices will start going back up in anticipation of factory demands for scrap. A week or 2 after the factories confirm orders and start foundries the Chinese scrap piles will be hitting last bits and pieces, first of new deliveries of baled scrap supposed to get to foundries-- some slack in timing expected. First full moon after winter solstice is start of Lunar New Year- that was January something this year so now is about time for China factories to need some more material- meaning US scrap dealers now getting paid for dockside delivery at decent price for the full demand cycle.
