7.3 di not labeled powerstroke

Is there an oil line besides to the turbo that can leak and prevent running?
I didn't check the year. It died, out of oil. A bunch was added, but no fire. It was empty again when I looked at it 2 days ago, with no run time. it's got about 225 thousand on it. Ran good til then just quit. No fire, no pop, nothing, just cranks.

I assume there are no external leaks? The orings on the injectors can go bad and cause the oil to dissappear. Look in the fuel filter, if black from oil (and not algae) then you need to pull the injectors and replace the orings. When air enters the high pressure gallys it takes a lot of cranking to purge it before the engine will fire.

Both style engines were available in the 94s, IDI turbo and DI turbo but both said turbo diesel on the fenders.

The early 7.3DI were not labeled "powerstroke". I assume you know what the difference is between IDI and DI. There is a plug on the HPOP cover you can remove to see if there's oil in there, also can remove the oil pressure sender and run a mechanical gauge to test oil pressure supply.

I read your post again, sounds like you might have the "disappearing oil" problem. If so, follow what butch said in earlier post.

Just look at the VIN. If a K it is a 7.3 IDI turbo. If an F it is a Powerstroke. BIG difference.

My 1994 is an IDI turbo and here is the VIN. Starts with "1FT" that is where it is made. Then "H" for the GVWR. Then "X26" and that is the body style. Then "K" for IDI, 7.3 diesel. If it was an "F" it would be a Powerstroke.

VIN # 1FTHX26K6RKA09628. Manf. date 9/93

Must be a late 94 model.
7.3 idi engines where non turbo till 94, turbo's where installed on early 94 7.3 idi engines.
In late 94 Ford changed over to the electronically controlled 7.3 di Power Stroke engine but continued to label the trucks as Turbo Diesels, in 95 Ford added the Power Stroke badges.
One of my nephews has a late 94 Power Stroke with Turbo Diesel badges, my 95 had PS badges.

That said if it's loosing oil but not leaking out check the fuel in the tank to see if in has oil in it.
It sounds like a injector oring has failed allowing high pressure oil into the fuel system.
PS engines hold around 14 quarts of oil and can loose about 8-10 qrts before the injectors quit firing, if your engine got low enough to quit running, you refilled it and now it's low again, that could be as much as 4 gallons of oil that went somewhere, if it's not leaking out someplace it had to go into the fuel tank.
A failed inj oring won't let it build enough oil pressure to fire the inj.

Model year 1993 IDI was available with a dealer-installed Banks turbo system. Early 1994 was available with a factory installed ATS system
for the IDI.

If your sure it's a powerstroke just ask for 95 year for parts, makes it a lot easier at the parts store.

I told the owner about it.
I may be able to pick up a powerstroke for cheap. He's tired of putting money into junk pick-ups.

This would have had the ZF5 5-speed manual, right? It's got a bit of a grind in 2nd gear.

I have one of the late 94 ford also. It does have a f as the second digit. The cover over the fuel filter says direct injection. Valve cover says International. Garrett turbo. Good running motor.
