Strong winds combined with tall LARGE trees!!!

I had some wind damage here last night. Two of the large shade trees in the back yard got blown down. We had straight line winds that just tore them up. The wind was blowing a steady all day yesterday. It started to pickup at around 9 PM. I was in the kitchen putting on my shoes to go move the cars when all of a sudden the stuff in the cabinets on the west wall of the utility room was thrown out on the floor. The one tree hit the roof then slid down it an hit the car and west wall all at once. There are two wall studs broke and three roof rafters cracked.

I had one car totaled and two other damaged. One shed roof caved in and minor damage to the house. I got about half of it clean up today. It was slow going getting the trees off the cars without doing more damage. Looks like I maybe getting the run around form the insurance company. I call the one that has the house/farm insurance. The regular agent was out today. The lady on the phone sure did not know much about what was going on. So I hope to have better luck with the regular fellow. I would not bet on it. I rarely come away from dealing with an insurance company and not feel violated. LOL

That's too bad. At least everyone is ok though and the rest can be fixed or replaced. Hope it all goes easy for you.

WIndy here in St cloud right now (40 to 50 mph) I have no trees that could hit my house from the direction of the wind. Interesting wind bands on the NOAA weather radar in ND moving to here.
Yours looks nasty to the crushed car. Best of luck with insurance. Jim

amazing what wind can do. Last week in mid Tenn. it took down a bunch of big old Oak trees & they had no leaves on'em. Strangest thing was my 16 ft. pontoon boat was on its 2 wheeled trailer & wind pushed it 50 ft. forward, across a level gravel lot! Several other machines were also moved but no damage. Lucky the wind came from directly behind the boat. Parked crossways to the wind might've caused it to be flipped.

Not good, JD. I lost a lean-to on the hayshed a few years back to snow load. At least, Natonwide had a guy out two days later, and a preliminary check in the mail before a week was out. Sometimes, it seems like it costs, but that insurance is sure handy when the defication hits the rotary oscillator......

We had the wind here last week. We had no damage at the farm but town was without power for almost 2 days. A few miles north of me one farm had both grain legs blown down and lost a large pole building. Seen a large number of center pivots blown over also. The neighbor installs pivots and said he has 13 that he has to repair.

Old shade trees close to buildings are always a hazard. One of our neighbors had a tall tree that would seriously damage his house if it blew down. They had a tree service with a bucket truck come out and cut the tree down from the top in sections. They also dug out the stump.

Sorry to see of your losses. We lost two big trees in two seperate wind storms in February. One smacked a shed pretty good and my insurance adjuster was out in 2 days. Had a check in my hands 3 days later for a very fair amount. Auto Owners Insurance has been very good to me over the years, hope things turn out for you on that end.

JD,
In 2011 I had the same problem. Straight winds damaged two homes and 3 garages. Trees put sky lights in the houses and garages. Pulled electric service down.

I hauled 25 dump trailer loads of branches to a place that grinds them up for mulch because my insurance wouldn't pay for any trees not on buildings. I also had tree trimmer remove the trees on the houses.

That's when I decided I really hate any tree that can fall on my buildings. I spent over $10k having trees removed or seriously trimmed back.

A year before, I changed insurance companies. I went to Indiana Farmers Insurance and I'm glad I did. They were a great company to work with. All I had to pay for was the deductible.

Lawn mowers damage trees. When a mower strikes tree trucks or roots, the tree will suffer. I had a Chinese elm removed last month. The tree was in bad shape, thanks to tenants and lawn mowers.

A front loader with forks will make cleaning up your mess easier than doing it all with mussels. I also use a landscape rake attached to forks to push the sticks in a pile to pick up with loader.

Have fun, glad no one was hurt.

Sorry to hear about your damages. Mother Nature can be a wicked old gal sometimes. I hope your negotiations with the insurance company go satisfactorily. Best wishes and good luck.

Sure could have been worse but man what a Mess to deal with glad no one was hurt,, and good luck with the agent I have been on the short side of claims most every time as well, this old Cottonwood could not take the wind here a few days ago either, it is a lot bigger than it looks in the pic, but it is going to have to go down all the way before I will mess with it

JD call the 1-800 number provided by the insurance company. The agent may not know as much as he/she thinks they do.

Glad you all are ok.
I'm in the process of clearing land on a lake to build a new home. Cut down 72 trees. My wife asked why I cleared such a big area for just a house. 100 foot tall oaks and a few maples. Told her so when the wind blew and they lost limbs or fell over they would not hit the house. She whined and doesn't believe me. Said she wanted the shade for the house. Anybody in central MI need some firewood?

Sorry for your bad luck. We are getting your hard winds here in Michigan today. My Farm Bureau agent always tells me my vehicles are not covered under my house ins. in case of a fire or something in my house with the attached garage. The cars or my truck is covered by their own ins. only. Hopefully you have full coverage on your vehicles. Good luck with your ins. adjuster.

The main thing is you and your family are ok . Everything else is just stuff. It can be fixed or replaced. Good luck with the insurance folks. Hope they take good care of you

I'm glad to hear no one was hurt. Sorry about the cars. Feel worse about the shed...LOL! Be careful cleaning that up!

We had a similar experience in June of 2011. To big box elders were uprooted, and landed on a big burr oak back of the house. The oak was severely damaged, and had to come down too. We lost all our west side shade in one night!

We were within inches of having a tree trunk in our sons bedroom, and the same with the sun room.

While the mess looks bad, please count your blessings. Everyone is OK. Insurance will cover the cars, etc.

I was sad... that oak had at least 162 rings. It had been there since our homesite was first settled. But we planted a couple nice maples, and transplanted some burr oaks from elsewhere on the farm. The grandkids (hopefully someday) will have nice shade.

Have a safe clean up.

JD, We had a very large fir tree come down on jan 4th 2017. Still dealing with it. Only thing that has been done is the tree as been cut and split. Had siding damage, roof and gutters also. Lost a carport that had a 12k generator in it that was totaled. Insurance has been ok but it is finding contractors to fix everything. One outfit wanted to put siding on the whole house. [$40,000] dollars, complete new roof, mine is only 6 months old, $32,000 for the roof. Didn't think insurance would go for that. Be nice if they would. Look at your policy real good. Mine specifies replacement. So as explained by my agent, whatever it costs is what it is and they have to pay to fix. At least in my case. Maybe I will get some of my premiums back after all of these years. Good luck and take lots of pictures. As per my agent.

I had a tree blow down myself here in Central KS Monday. Straightline winds over 50mph at times. Lucky my tree was where it missed everything. We have had 30 - 50 mph winds for a solid 3 days and close to that for 2 more days. Grass fires have burnt 650,000 acres in Central and SW Central KS. I believe they have them under control now though. Sure sorry for your damage. Bob
