Speedi Sleeve on a long shaft question.

Are there any suggestions on what to do with a Speedi Sleeve when you can't drive it on far enough with the little driver they give you?

I have had to cut a hole in the driver and make a pipe extension before to install them on long shafts I always use some flange sealant when installing them

I have used a piece of heavy wall PVC tubing also, there are "Stiffeners" available for some applications that will give you a steel surface to drive on or to meet the part being driven.I use this one for installing shaft seals on 4020 clutch shafts.

Hmm...had never heard of these before. Had to look it up.

Seems like the PVC idea would work fine - similar to putting on a stubborn axle dust cap. If you find that your PVC is a little too loose, you could try shimming the PVC using some steel flashing. Put enough of a coil inside the PVC to get a good (but not "too" tight) fit, then drill through and bolt the flashing in place.

Yes, that is easier, but then you're only getting contact from the outer edge of the part. Using shim stock will effectively reduce the inner diameter of the pipe you're using to drive the part on.

I have mostly used PVC pipe. If it is not a close fit, I cut the end of the pipe multiple times in a pizza slice arrangement and tighten the end of the pvc pipe with a hose clamp to close down the I.D. of the pipe. Like a piston ring compressor. If you can't get close enough with the I.D. of PVC pipe, try PVC pipe couplers.

Thanks for all the imput guys I'll see what I can come up with. I noticed one individual mentioned heating the sleeve. I thought of that right away but did some searching and found some things against that but if you do not to get it too hot because it won't go back to its original shape. Has anyone heated one and it worked?

A PVC or metal pipe close to the OD of the shaft works OK. If the shaft and pipe length are 10 times the sleeve diameter, the shaft helps keep the pipe square to the Speedi-Sleeve. If the shaft is very long you can push on the end of the pipe with a board or a plate that has a hole in the center that slips over the shaft. If you apply even pressure on both sides of the plate the sleeve goes on square.
