Charging for air

Years ago there would be the joke of a car sale man would charge you for the air in the tires if he could.
Now they do.
I purchased a new truck last week, and when you give you the list of the costs and final price there is the line item of option. listed in the options is Nitrogen in the tires for $200.
I told the sale man that I know what it dose and I refuse to pay for air and he took it off.

Needs to be added to the Today's Funny? Lungs full of air? Lol!

Our folks got a new van 3 or 4 years back. Came with nitrogen but i don't think they paid extra. I woulda heard, LOL!

I got a kick out of the old-school service station in my wife's hometown of New Ulm, MN. You could always go to Wilfahrts' and get "Free Air".

Nitrogen in tires is a complete waste of time. The difference in weight is negligible. Also, tires deteriorate from the outside more from UV-B radiation than from a bit of oxygen in the tire.
Oxygen's atomic weight is 16. Nitrogen's is 14. So, with 20% oxygen in the tire, the actual weight will vary by such a small amount as to be immeasurable.

You remember the Old Time band in MN....Whoopee John? His name was John Wilfarht, and his slogan was...John Wilfarht and his band will play! BTW- Wally Pikal died this week- he was the bandleader who could play two trumpets at once. Even made it on Johnny Carson years ago.

Good for you. I would have told them to fly a kite too. Dad said when he bought his first bicycle back in the early to mid-thirties the guys at the gas station had him convinced he had to change the air in the tires to break the tires in. Dad believed it and came back to change the air in the tires. The guys at the station had a good laugh while they watched him performing the act in front of them. When dad got older he worked at that same station and now it was his turn to pull that same stunt on a kid but I don't remember him saying if he got it pulled off or not.

My son noticed that the new gas station charges for air, and asked me how they thought they would get away with that. "Inflation," was my
answer.

Yeah, he didn't think it was funny either.

Nitrogen molecules are larger than air/oxygen molecules, so they will tend to stay pumped up better, in theory.

Too, nitrogen filled tires are supposed to run cooler than those filled with air.

In truck tires, it's just a waste of time, and in this case, an expected waste of money.....Glad you caught it.

Just for kicks I'd have probably made them deflate the tires and refill them with air....LOL

If the salesman had read over the invoice before handing it to you, it would suggest he thought you were an idiot that he could pull one over on.

If he did not look over the invoice before handing it to you then he is an idiot who clearly can not be trusted to look after your best interests.
He would have no idea if the invoice even matches what he said he was going to sell you.

Personally I would have seen it as a big red flag and walked out the door.

We had a kid at Ft Bliss, not real bright. Drove the supply deuce and a half. When it was in for services (100% inspection, repair all defects, oil and lube once every 3 months in that day) a mechanic told him he needed to change the "stale" air in the tires. When they went looking for him they found him behind the shop building at the tire cage.......

I think the $200 for the "nitrogen" in the tires is a crock! There seems to be a few local tire dealers who have opted to offer nitrogen over air. The charge amounts to $5 per tire. I have opted to go with that additional charge. The salesmanship of this is the nitrogen does not have the moisture as air does, so you tend to have less problems with corrosion on the rim where the tire bead is. I have found that I have a lot less problems with leaky tires since switching to the nitrogen. It may be the dealership does a better job of ensuring the rim is clean and free of corrosion, as well as ensures the bead seats in with no leaks. I probably would not opt for the nitrogen for $200, but at $20, it is an easy decision to make and opt for the nitrogen filled tires.

. When I lived in Pa. I bought a sprayer at an auction. The tire was soft . I hooked it behind my pickup and pulled it to a Turkey Hill station to get air. I found out that it takes 2 quarters ,not just 1 to turn the pump on. I went inside to get change and waited in line long enough to make me mad. I had never heard of charging for air. Any way I put the 50 cents in and got going. By the time I got to New Holland I needed another 50 cents worth of air. Now I was always a Turkey Hill customer ,but this day I stopped at the new Sheetz store in New Holland and you know what ? The air was free. So for that reason I never went to a Turkey Hill stores again ever and I don't think I ever needed free air again .I doubt if Turkey Hill ever missed me but for the next 15 years or so I bought my gas where the air was free.

I don't have a problem paying a couple quarter's for air. The store has to buy a compressor, air hose, tire chuck and pay the electricity to run the thing. Plus replace the hose and tire chuck when idiots damage it or plain steal it. The places that have free air still have those costs, they are just added to the price of your slurpee, sandwich, or gallon of gas you buy.
