JD 4020 vs IH 407 Diesel Engine Rebuild

The IH 407 in an 856 has dry sleeves. Tight/precise tolerances when replacing the sleeves - not something we'd try and honestly, not a job I'd casually hand over to a local diesel shop with zero experience with these dry sleeve engines.

How does the 404 diesel in the 4020 compare. I believe it has wet sleeves? Does that make it an easier rebuild? Where does the 404 rate on a DYI scale, local diesel shop or is it just as difficult a rebuild as the IH 407 ?

Are wet sleeve engines typically found in New Generation and newer JD's ?

The 4020,and most JD engines since the 2 cylinder, are wet sleeves. If the coolant condition has been maintained, they are usually easier to overhaul. We have seen some engines which have developed enough lower deck wear that they will not hold o-rings however. The worst of these that we have seen are the early JD 202 as used in the 2020 and 2510,and in one 1020 gas. Some of the newer JD compact tractors are sleeveless.

I overhauled a 1960's 4020 6 cyl., 370 or thereabouts cu. in., LP inframe. Had never done it before. Was wet sleeved and reason for the OH mainly was concern over oil coming out of weep ports on the side of the block.....little holes that tell you that either the cooling Oring or oil Oring has failed and is leaking. In this particular case it had been OH'd before and the mechanic put the black and orange Orings in the wrong location,,,,one is coolant resistant the other oil resistant, one above the weep hole and the other below....Neoprene was probably the black one and oil resistant...been 30 years since I did it.

One sleeve had pits or something wrong with it and JD had it in stock. The others cleaned up with honing. The head was very heavy and getting off was a problem with limited resources I had at the time. Machine shop worked it over. Sleeves needed a special puller and a guy from a dealer had access to one and loaned it for the job. Other than that basically an engine overhaul.....pan was cast iron as I recall and it was heavy.
