Swamp soldiers AKA red wing blackbirds at our bird feeders this morning. This is March 3, temps in the low 20's, skiff of snow on the ground here in central Michigan. Birds shudda stayed south for another few weeks!

Swamp soldiers!? Never heard that one but it applies! I have not seen any of those corn eating sons of...this year yet. To me they are one of the best signs of Spring.

We've had exactly one blackbird coming to the feeder the last week or so. None of the other birds like him. . . .

All the birds flying north tells you that Spring is as good as here. Any cold or snow won't last.

Black birds with red or orange patch on leading edge of wing, sometimes a white or cream patch as well. May not show with wings folded. Females may be browner and may not have color on leading edge of wing. Summer they like to hang around swamps and fields eating bugs and weed seeds. Often blamed for crop damage in mature unharvested grain fields

We get thousands of Sandhill cranes here in SE AZ. They have been going through their routine of gathering in huge flocks and circling higher and higher as they prepare to head North. This is much earlier that previous years
