Brake lining material

I want to see if I can rebuild the fan clutch on my antique car. Mainly because everyone says they are no good and just replace it with a spacer. I think that it would be cool to have a working clutch. Anyway, the only reason that it doesn't work is that the lining came off the shoe. The lining needs to be able to wrap around the shoe which is about 3" in diam. and needs to be about 3/4" wide. The tough part; there appears to be room for only about 3/32 thickness in order for it to back away from the drum. The thinnest that McMaster-Carr has is 1/8. There is also the concern of vulcanizing because it appears that the flexible molded ones need to be vucanized after being glued on, or maybe the vulcanizing is what glues them on. Any ideas?

Hi Showcrop. Check out Clevelandoak.com. I dealt with a Jay Jarret. He saved me a lot for the later Cub Cadet disc break lining material. Very helpful. They are located in Canton Ohio.

Mechanics on the strip mines made brake shoe pads with copper screen & body putty for the big rock trucks.

I wonder if the black high temp gasket material would work?

Cut it to size, JB Weld it to the shoe, assemble it to hold the lining in place while the JB set.

(quoted from post at 20:47:24 03/02/17) Just curious, what car are you working with?

It is a 1967 Datsun 1600 roadster, although the fan and clutch are from my 1968 parts car. This started just over two years ago as a quick paint job on a mechanically sound car to get it back on the road and looking good after being put up for twelve years. The project has suffered very badly from mission creep, and it was only maybe six months ago when I finally turned the corner and started getting closer to being done. Then three weeks ago I found that the motor had major hidden problems, So I dragged the parts car out of the barn and into the shop to pull the motor. The motor from the parts car is much better and this is why I got into the fan clutch.
