I just wanted to thank everyone for carrying on yesterdays conversation in a civil and respectful manner. I have always considered myself an open minded person. It was an interesting discussion and I enjoyed reading and considering your comments and opinions. Well done folks.
Back out to the shop. I am working on my new planter. Have a nice day.

It reminded me of an undeniable fact, when I graduated from high school 50+ years ago you could get a job much more easily than now. Unskilled paid around $2 an hour. Gas was around 25 cents, so you earned about 8 gallons of gas worth an hour. The price of gas is cheap compared to what it was not so long ago, now around $2/gallon, prices on most commodities have risen proportionally. To equal the old days unskilled labor now would need to earn around $16/hr. Also taxes are worse now, for sure health insurance is much higher. Considering the trend, I think it's likely going to be hard to go back to what I consider were the good old days.

I don't think it would be hard to go back. If people were willing to do it. I am 66 and remember when you would jump at the chance to have a job. Today most want the paycheck. But not willing to do the work to get it.To much free stuff given to them.

Agreed. This is one of the few forums I follow where a polite exchange of views is even possible.

I was the original poster and I see no reason not to be civil on here. If I do not like a post I do not reply. My original quest was to find out what others had seen in there lives.

It sure is nice to have a civilized discussion. Usually the disagreements seem to be mostly based on a lack of information coupled with some political hype, so if we can prove the facts in our discussion and try to see it from the other point of view then the chasm that separates us usually narrows considerably. I usually don't discuss an opinion that I disagree with unless I know that the facts are wrong, then I try to point out facts but leave them to their opinion since I also like to see different viewpoints and facts since I sure don't know everything. Good luck on the planter.

I apologize for my part in the original conversation, my mind wanders. But I have always believed good conversation does not have to stay on a certain track. But automation has been somewhat more in the news in relation to the job market lately and is an interesting subject. I also wonder about driverless cars. Suppose we can do with fewer autos in the future by just getting on the web and scheduling a pickup from a driverless auto, maybe a group share thing for local trips. So much the future could have in store.

I, too, appreciate the civility of this forum. I'm quite an outspoken person and, in some cases, I can very much think I'm right when I'm totally not. But sometimes this old geezer still has a thing or two to say that makes "some" amount of sense.

Looking forward to learning from the other old geezers here - and maybe even something from the youngun's now and then!
