Farmers Helping A Farmer

Here is an interesting photo from about 1953. A Darke County Ohio (near Bradford) farmer had a serious debilitating stroke. Nearby farmers showed up to help him out. My two older brothers are on the Oliver tractor in the back and my dad is in the front holding his cap. My dad farmed the farm for about another 6 or so years. The farm's owner lived for about another dozen years but with a moderate permanent physical and mental impact.

That's pretty cool.
I grew up close to there - near Bloomer.
1953 was long before my time though.

Well .. our home farm was on Fetters Road .. just about 2 miles from Bloomer as the crow flys. My retired brother and his son are still farming in the area. The son is farming around 500 acres .. mosting using vintage farm equipment that I see posted here frequently.

I remember where Fetters rd. is. We were on Miami-Shelby.
My parents still live there but rent their ground out.

That's what farm neighbors did. Today some would . I would love to see more of that. Helping one another out even in good times. I think its sad that we have become this way. I include myself in this......Kenny

Very cool picture.

quite a variety of tractors in that picture.

what were they helping with?

Since I was only about 5 at the time .. I was not there, nor know what was going on. Looks like early summer and what appears to be soybeans in the front. I don't see any implements behind the tractors .. that many tractors could do a lot of something!! ;)

Reminds me that my Dad and Charley had words years before so they avoided each other for about 30 years. When Charley's son fell ill during harvest, Charley came out of retirement and started combining the remaining crop all alone. Dad saw what was going on and took our grain truck to the field to haul away the grain so Charley could keep the combine going steady. Charley cried when he realized that the only person that showed up to help was his old adversary from years before.

Amen KENIND.It s a hole different world today. I like to help other people when I can. I think farmers are still willing to help in time of need. RB

I have been milking cows for the four months for neighbor who had to have ankle replacement surgery. My brother-in-law has been
doing the same for one of his neighbors who had a brain tumor at Thanksgiving.

I was on the receiving end once had surgery
and the antique club came out and put in 20
acres of wheat. Sadly all the neighbors I've
helped over the years not one showed up.

I"ve been involved in two projects like that for disabled neighbors. Gives a good feeling to pay back something for all the neighbors who helped us out when we started farming from scratch in a new community.

What a great picture.I would love to know the names of some of those old farmers .I live about 8 miles south of there and My wife's
grandparents lived on Bradford-Childerns Home Rd.I wish I could have spent the day with those fellows.

(quoted from post at 19:32:22 03/02/17) What a great picture.I would love to know the names of some of those old farmers .I live about 8 miles south of there and My wife's
grandparents lived on Bradford-Childerns Home Rd.I wish I could have spent the day with those fellows.

Some of the faces / names that I recognize are:

- Herb Sargent (my dad) in front holding his cap in his hand
- My brothers Gene & Harold in back on the Oliver 77
- JD Bablyon in front next to my dad
- Chalmer Miller (my uncle) & his son Larry
- Dave Brewer (married to my cousin)
- Herb Kiehl (who lived on Bradford-Children's Home Rd)
- Dick Brooks (at least it looks like him)

That's the best I can do.

There's probably someone here who can rattle off what all those old tractors are!
