58 JD 60 oil in fuel sediment bowl

Hello, im new to working on old tractors. My gfs grandfather has ALS and doesnt have long to live so i thought id give him some joy by getting his 58 John Deere 60 running. Hes the original owner and its his baby. Hasnt run in several years. Well i was very excited to get get it running today....it runs well but there is one problem. The fuel in the glass sediment bowl turns black. My hunch is that it has to do with the automatic fuel shut off which is controlled by oil pressure. From what i can gather there are some diaphragms in there that might be deteriorated? Or could it be a carb issue? Am i on the right track? Hoping its not something more serious. Sorry if this is too long winded. Any help would be appreciated!

If it's actually oil, the shutoff might be your problem.
This one was purely old gas after setting for a long time.
Tank, carb, lines, sediment bowl all full of it.

Wow Royse that sure is a mess. I have seen with this crappy gas stuff some what like that. To clean it out thoroughly he could dump two or three gallons of E-85 in the tank but let it run out of the bottom of 5he carb so as not to attack anything in the carb. Had to do that with an old metal gas, tank on a mower. Cleans it super slick.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Call your JD dealer to see if the diaphragms are still available (maybe). An option is to replace the sediment bowl set-up with a standard (non oil type) and plug off the oil line. HTH

There are dealers on Facebook and in Green magazine that sell new diaphragms that are alcohol resistant .
Two cylinder Club can run the serial number and send some interesting info.
Good that you are bringing your Grand Father's 60 back to life.

I thought the last year for 60 was 56. Wouldn't a 58 be a 620? I know this has nothing to do with the question but now I am curious.

I have a JD620 and have replaced the diaphrams. And then put autoshutoff on my Farmall M replacing the diaghram while doing it. They are available from Deere and have lasted thru several tanks of E85. Cost is around $20 for the two diaghrams and the rubber washer that does shutoff.

If you are going to replace the diaphragms, be sure to mark the parts for proper orientation upon re assembly. Don't ask how I know this.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I ordered a kit online with the strainer, gasket, diaphragms etc so ill see how that goes. I read online where some people end up getting gas in the crankcase from bad diaphragms but i checked the oil and doesnt seem to be any gas in it. Fuel tank is seems clean however i did manage to fish this out of it!

Just as an FYI, DEERE still has many parts available for those old machines. You can view, print, or download the parts catalog at the link below. (.pdf format.)
