John Deere 2755 Battery

I put 2 new John Deere batteries in the JD 2755 along with new battery cables. Ran tractor for about 2 hours and one battery boiled over spilling acid down the side of the tractor. I checked the alternator's running voltage which was 3.8 volts. Took the one battery back to John Deere and they tell me there is nothing wrong with the battery. I did check to see if any cells were over filled and all were exactly the same. So what am I missing? I figured if only one battery is boiling over, it must be that battery or both would be boiling. If the alternator for some reason was over charging for a short time, both batteries would be over charging and both would boil. Why is only one battery boiling over?

If your still using the ground cables that hook to the firewall you could easily have a ground issue. One battery may not be making a good ground. It would not be charging as much as the other one. You need to check the battery voltage at the voltage regulator. If can be low causing the batteries to boil.

The best thing to do on these series of tractor is to take two cables and ground the batteries directly to one of the starter mounting bolts. This way you have a good ground. The entire system just works better this way.

JD Seller: I am ahead of you on this one, I have the ground directly going to the starter. One ground cable connects both batteries and continues to the starter. The cables are new and the connections are good. Thanks for the reply. I still feel that one battery is defective. I think I am going to take one battery out and only use one, the tractor starts very easily and it is unusually warm here right now. If the one battery works OK I will then take it out and install the other and see if that one works. If they both work OK I will install them in series and see what happens. If I remember I will give you an update after a week or so of running the tractor. Thanks again.

New batteries on mine slobbered out the vents too and they were only filled to the bottom of the ring. Ideal electrolyte level today is lower now than it used to be.

Even with your good grounds check the battery voltage at the alternator and regulator. IF you have a resistance in the harness some were it will cause the alternator to over charge.

DO NOT install the batteries in series because if you do you'll likely see some smoke from alternator & voltage regulator.

You are so right! I know better than that and should have said parallel. Just a 73 yr old brain malfunction. Thanks for correcting me, I
appreciate someone that reads these statements closely.
