Removing rust and paint from a loader

I bought a tractor with a Swartz 1800 loader that has some rust etc. on it. I was thinking of taking the loader off and repainting the loader. I want to do it right so I was thinking I should sand blast it. I have no experience sandblasting so I was wondering if you could rent a sand blaster and should I do it in my shop with some type of homemade booth or should I do it outside in front of the shop.

You will be able to hire someone with a portable sand blaster to come to your place and blast it cheaper then you can rent one, as long as there is one in your area. Do it outside, then move inside for primer and psint

It takes a big compressor, to run, even a small sand blaster pot. Most home compressors just don't have enough CFM's to do the job. Yes it's best to be outside!

Look into a dustless blasting outfit in your area. Makes much less of a mess.

As an alternative to blasting, you could use an angle grinder with a wire wheel. You can remove a lot of rust and paint with a 4-1/2" angle grinder and one of those twisted wire brushes. Even more with a 7" grinder. Definitely cheaper than blasting.

You have to be very careful about getting sand in places you don't want it, sand is very abrasive. I would use a grinder and wire wheel as Barnyard said.

Only way I'd sandblast a loader was if I removed the cylinders and then also planned to tear apart all the pivot spots and clean all the sand from them ! Which basically turns the job into a ground up restoration.

Agreed, use sand and the pins and bushings will get, wait for it
ground...up
sorry!!

Just came in from using a air powered needle scaler on a spare tire rim. Removed a lot of paint, rust and scale pretty quick. Surface is kind of rough, so may want to brush down with a wire wheel. Unless you have an industrial scale sand blaster, going to take you a long time to get much done. Is there a commercial sand blaster company around your area?

Unless there is a commercial booth I'd do it outside. If there is a commercial blaster ask if he has ground up walnut shells or corn cob. Both are biodegradable and will not affect pins and bushings etc. Walnut shell does leave an oil film that has to be cleaned off before painting. I am repeating what my guy told me. He has corn cob and is going to do a VA for me.

Blasting around hydraulic hoses, fittings, rams and seals ............ hmmmmmm !!! No matter how hard you try to seal or tape these areas off, chances are that sand will find its way into areas you would prefer it not be. Side mounted cup brush is the way to go, does it have to be show quality? Probably not .....

Another really good alternative to media blasting if you don't want to pay to get it done is a #40 flap wheel in your 4&1/2 inch grinder. I thought that cup wheels were the cat's meow until I found out about flap wheels

In my experience the twisted wire cup brushes are faster than flap disks. Flap disks remove metal and clog up with paint rather quickly.

I've also used stripping disks on sheet metal, but they're expensive and wear down quickly.

My experience is you can work your butt off getting the loader rust free. Then a year later of normal use, mine is scratched up, greasy, dirty and rusty.

Same with working tractors. Take them apart, clean them up, do body work, paint them, put them back together again and a year later the working girls look like they did before I painted them.

I just use wire brush on grinder, remove dirt and first layer of rust. Use rustoleum primer for heavy rust and paint it.

I've painted 4 tractors already and ask myself why do I do it, they will only look good for a short time?
