OT computer question?

I have Windows 7 Pro on a H/P computer. I turned my computer off last PM due to impending thunderstorms. When I turned my PC on this AM a message appeared I've never seen before that a disk check needed to be performed. It started checking and a word appeared that caught my attention which was "reparsed". I turned my PC off & rebooted in safe mode. I ran 3 different types of Malware/spyware/virus scans that showed nothing wrong.
Thanks,Jim

I assume since you were shutting down due to storm you disconnected from power. If this is the case, it is likely you pulled power before the disk was fully down, and prompted this (just an educated guess).
I would just allow the disk check to complete, and most likely you are fine. It is unlikely you have any malware or virus. Many years ago I used to work in TV repair (showing my age now), and I had a
customer that kept bringing in his tv with lightening damage. It was nearly the same issue each time, and we had a lot of storms coming through that year in the spring. I kept asking if he indeed was
disconnecting his tv during storms, and he kept insisting that he was. I finally specifically asked, are you disconnecting both Antenna, AND power, to which he responded "No, I only thought I needed to
disconnect the antenna". I suggested he pull the plug from power as well, and he was not back for more of my services. Each time the tv had a fuse, and diode blown (obviously spikes from power, and lucky
he did not get more damage, but I suspect it was just spikes and not full blown lightening strikes).

Windows wants to check the disk because it was shut down improperly.
As you use the computer, Windows keeps some files open. It also stores up some information like changes in settings as you proceed. Not all of that information is immediately written to the disk. Then, when Windows shuts down, it saves all of that information to the disk. That is why it takes a bit of time to shut down when you tell it you are finished. If there are any partially written files when you powered it off, Windows wants to do the disk check to correct any errors. During this disk checking, you may see any number of unfamiliar messages. Unless it is an alert of a critical error, just let it continue. No harm is done.

I am sorry I really can not help on this but I got a good suggestion. For an easy fix I would take it in to some body you trust on computers. Have them look at it and they will have it up and running like in to time. that is what is so great about Windows. I use to know DOS but threw the years I have forgot it. Thank God it is not 1994 and having DOS codes first before windows.

Don't have a clue what "reparsed" means but I see it and "resplawn" on boot up of the controllers at work all the time. Sometimes it's just a / following it and sometines
there a string of numbers.

I have win 7 prem and any time I have a concern I reboot in safe mode and restore to the last automatic restore point. Then I run the virus checks. This works even if you
get a screen lock/takeover from a website that locks your computer.

If you have a lot of thunderstorms and unplug often, you might want to consider a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). When you need to unplug quickly, unplug the UPS and not the PC. The PC will continue shutting down on battery power.

Another thing is, if you unplug the power but still have any other cables to your computer, then your PC is still vulnerable to surges.

Thanks for all replies.

I think I shut down my PC correctly as the screen went black & the fan stopped running before I turned off the switch on the surge protector very similar to how I've shut it down many times.

Here is a link that defines/describes the "<a href="https://neosmart.net/wiki/chkdsk/">check disk</a>" utility in Windows.

No harm was done to your computer by the "check disk" utility.

Back in the old days, we used the [b:654c4848f0]CHKDSK[/b:654c4848f0] DOS command to fix several file management problems.

"<font color="#6699ff">[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]a word appeared that caught my attention which was "reparsed".[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]</font>"

<a href="http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/ntfs/filesReparse-c.html">Reparsing</a> records is part of DOS file management.

Hope this helps.
