Forstmann's Castle was a 2200 acre estate built by a woolen tycoon. Now owned by YMCA along with several thousand more acres.

My first attempt with captions, I think I messed up at least one. Hope you enjoyed the ride.

We lived near Stamford, NY for many years. I worked for a while in a packing plant in Prattsville and later I owned a water well drilling business. I enjoyed the people and those nice rolling hills until the New York city people discovered that they could buy cheap property there. It was good for my drilling business but bad for the environment.

I now live on the big river plain and I will never go back to those hills even though it looks good in the pictures that you are sharing. Thanks for sharing and keep your snow tires handy.

sms,

Great photos. Pretty country there.

I really like the ornate old white building. I wonder if it was a hotel once upon a time.

Neversink - what a great name for a river. Someone had a sense of humor.

Great pics, SMS. They sure shatter the mistaken idea some folks have of New York state of being entirely urbanized ( not mine, I lived near Watkins Glen years ago).

I lived up on Smokey Hollow Road for awhile in Schenevus. That before Interstate 88 was open. I cannot imagine driving back and forth to Newburgh everyday. 2 1/2 hours one-way?

Yes, old hotel, town is almost empty, new road passed it by. The name Neversink comes from Indian name navasing or something means "mad river". That road has been washed out several times in the last 10 years. The ironic part is the original town of Neversink was moved to build the Neversink reservoir for NYC. Here is the reservoir.

I used to work at a place on Route 209 in Ellenville. Not far from where you were it appears. Pretty area but too crowded for me to live
there anymore. NY is a beautiful state. Too bad someone ruined it.

I look back very fondly on the years when I lived upstate. Good times, great people, beautiful land
and back then deep deep snow.

Very nice tour. Have never been to upstate NY, would like to see it sometime. Looks like you have pretty well mastered the Larry on the Corner method of captioning- good job.

sms,
Thanks. Very interesting info on the town and the river.

Wish I could wander through that old hotel with camera in hand.

Never tried fly fishing. We were always on a lake in a boat... unless Dad ditched us kids for some peace and quiet - then we fished from the dock.
