Lighting relay needed

I have added some lighting to a tractor and think it would be a good idea to run the work lights through a relay. I was at Napa today and came home with something they recommended. I didn't look at it closely. Well, it has about 8 terminals on it and no directions. All of the terminals are numbered - it is clearly a replacement for a factory unit on something.

I want something simple - three wires or so and simple to install. Does anyone have a part number that Napa would have for such a thing? I'm sure I could order something but I prefer to support the local guys but want something someone here has used for such an application.

Ask for a Bosch 5 terminal relay. It is wired just like Jim's first pic in his diagrams. Also they usually have the diagram printed on the relay top.Mark

Yup, you have it right. Just go on eBay and look this one up. Item 271551630408. It is exactly what you want. Have it in a couple of days for $4.00. Relay with the socket and wire pigtails.

Look for a relay for electric fuel pump at Jeg's Summit or another race car parts supplier. I have used them for continuous heavy electrical load often and never failed one. NAPA should even have something. Some of the local dirt track racers use one from them.

One part number at Jeg's: JEGS Performance Products Part Number: 555-10557 $14.99 (30 amp relay)
Mr Gasket Part Number: 720-40H (40 amp relay) $25.18

The relay I use has only 4 terminals and mounts anyplace with one screw and was less than $10 at either O'rielys or Advance, forget for sure witch place as they are both next door to each other. One wire to power supply, one wire from your light switch and that carries only enough power to operate the relay, one to ground and one to the lights you want to operate. It is rated at 20 amp and if you want to power more lights than what that will handle split them to multiple relays on multiple circuts. This is the way I have them on my truck and they were that way on my van as well. Do have a Napa store as well but just too high priced to go there plus anouther high priced parts store as well. If you want to hook the extra lights to your current sitch the relay does not take enough power that it would be a problem.

Bought a 30 amp relay at O'Reilly's that had 5 pins, worked good. Had it in the electrical section of the store next to switches. Diagram to wire it on the back. One side normally open, other side normally closed.
