A different block project...

Since I am into concrete today....

This years big project, once the grain bins are up, is to rebuild the block foundation for the old dairy barn. No problem doing this. The only difference between this and prior projects is that it has windows and a couple doors. The idiot who tore down the silo also scrapped all the steel window frames from the walls. I am thinking there must be a source for new ones but I am having a bit of trouble finding them. I don't need fancy double glazed sash windows. Fixed multi pane, steel frame...I am thinking they tie into the grooves in the end blocks, someone can correct me if I am wrong. I could use a couple of service doors. The slider I can handle..BTDT. Any info appreciated. This is a tough one on Google.

one way to do it,,it wouldnt be a fancy window,,,you can buy storm windows lay the block opening with the square end with the grooves facing the openings,,slide the storm window thin side edges into the grooves. It would be a simple thin window, but it works.I dont explain things well, the e mail is open if I Confused it all

Not a bad idea. I can't use it on this large project but would be good on a smaller building. Using 4 pane on this barn. That was what the original had.

They are much bigger than the ones I had in mind. I think I know where there are some new basement windows which are thermopane. They are maybe 2 or 3 blocks high and maybe 3 or 4 wide. These were bought for a job and they could not use them so they are stuck with a couple skids of them. They are vynil frames and made for new constructon and they were cheap to get rid of them

Yeah...I am doing a restoration of sorts. This place was homesteaded in the 1830's and I am putting up the barn as close to original as I can do it. Post and beam and all... :)

It is good to see that there are people like you who want to preserve the old farm buildings. You might have some problem finding those old windows that slid into the blocks but I am sure that you can find something that works. Happy farming.

Look around for someone that is selling old barn lumber or barn beams.....they likely are in the business of reclaiming material and may have windows or could keep their eyes open for what you need.

That is going to be so chancy. Good idea but I would have to get real lucky. Problem one is that I need the right size and style. The original homesteaders live close by and I would like to keep the barn in the style they built. Second is I would have to find enough of them the same size. Barn has about a dozen windows. I'm thinking this might work for doors, though.
