What should be included in a good valve/cylinder head job?

I posted this in the Farmall section, but wanted to post it here also.

I'm have a valve/head job done on an IH C221 gas engine. I've bought a valve kit, and am taking it to the machine shop today.

Besides replacing the valve guides and re-doing the seats, I would like to know what else should be included in a properly done cylinder head/valve rebuild.

This is off of a working tractor, that does a fair amount of heavy field work. Thanks for any advice!

seats redone, rocker arms should be reground as well, springs should be checked for correct pressures, check for cracks on head, new seals, valve tips reground if using old valves

It is also important to check the head for flatness, but he will do that anyway, along with resurfacing.

Make sure that the head gasket surface of the head is flat. Shop will know what to do to make that determination.

Check the head for flatness . but a good machine shop will do that first before anything else is done a really good shop with check valve height after doing the grinding and even with using new springs shimming may be required for correct spring hight for proper seat pressure . BUT today not may do this as it takes TIME and they don't care just get the job in and get it out and get the most money they can .

A reputable machine shop will KNOW what needs done. Just bring the head and the kit to him and tell him to make it like new again.

On the other side of the coin, how does a good machine shop judge a customer?

If they sell parts, you have already insulted them by bringing your own.

Good luck.

Yes, kind of putting the cart before the horse to get the parts before a head or block or crank or cam is evaluated

OK Round 2: They should clean it, (frost plugs and water jacket too) flux it for cracks. Check for square/flat surface and other problems (broken boss where rockers bolt down, stripped plug holes etc.) New guides. springs, keepers, valves. Rocker arms and shafts, pushrods can be done too. Now some engine's may get guide liners or valves reused.

If you don't want the head sprayed with primer... be sure to specify that! The machine shop we go to, automatically primes them when the job is complete.

We only found that out because my husband asked the guy what's your complete process? So the machinist took us into his shop and explained everything... and concluded with "and then we prime the head".

My husband said, "Whoa! Wait a minute - we do NOT want this head primed/painted because it's going back on a 100% rusty tractor... make sure you note that very clearly on the work-order. Because I can promise you I'll be very upset if come to pick it up and it's primed instead of rusty."

The machinist replied... "Well that's sure different."

We'd have been all kinds of ticked-off if it had been sprayed with primer.

Also make sure they know what sort of
job you want done. Just enough to get
it running, as cheap as possible. Or
like new, money is no object? Some
shops will do either if you want.

That would be for your "average, Everyday" valve job...

Better 3-angle ( or better) valve work is what i CALL A "Premium Valve Job ".. which would only be sought be a finicky (Tractor Puller) who plans to play with it...( or who wants the BEST)..

Hey! Come on jocco, you know that there have to be ten responses before you can start round two!

I would highly recommend installing teflon valve seals on that engine. We used to do that to every one of the IH 6 cylinders we did and oil control was much better than the umbrella seals.

You need a good core with no cracks or warpage and the shop will start there. Any work done on a cracked or warped head is a waste.
