When internet auction DO work....

I still do not care for the small local auctioneer selling on the internet, but I have really good luck on eBay.

Two years ago. Farm Boss Stihl chainsaw. One of the good old ones. Handle broke in shipping so I replaced it. The saw would not run properly so I took it to dealer and they declined to repair due to parts issues. Seller took it back, refunded purchase price, shipping, shipping to return, parts for handle and bench fee for service. Plus $30 gas money. Then he was shocked when I gave him positive feedback.

Last week I bought a new SDS max rotary hammer. Fella said he bought it and never used. I have to drill a LOT of rebar into a 90 year old foundation this summer plus the bins I am putting up. Tool does not hammer. Took it to the dealer and got a repair estimate. I kept up a friendly banter with the seller the whole time so he knew what was going on. Told him the estimate and minutes later the full amount plus $35 extra for incidentals was in my PayPal account.

I did not ask either one of them for the extra. There are some good people out there.

Most hammer drills will not hammer when they are new, as the grease has set up in the drive. I put a dull bit in mine and held it against a hard surface and let it spin for a couple minutes until the hammers broke loose from the grease. That may not be the case with yours, but several people told me that they had the same experience as I did.

Dave: I differ with you on this one (rarely) when I buy an item and there is issues it goes back untouched, no take to dealer etc. This includes ebay or industrial places. It either works or it is a warrantee call. Now I am not one to buy a parts item (chainsaw with broken crankshaft) and then beat the seller up.

I have some sympathy for the seller, not all of this was his fault. So far I've had good luck buying on both eBay and Craiglist, like you said there are still a lot of good people out there.

ebay has cracked down pretty hard on sellers.

A couple of years ago I bought something; when I tried to leave positive feedback I moved the mouse and accidentally left a poor rating. Apologized to the seller and explained my mistake; a few days later I got a call from an ebay support rep asking if I intended to leave positive (seller had contacted them because even one negative was bad for business). Rep couldn't change the feedback but asked if I wanted to cancel it, I told him yes - I'd intended to give positive, so he removed my feedback.

That's ok, we all do what we need to do. In the case of the chansaw, I sent it back. But the rotary hammer was pretty nice and I wanted to keep it. The seller would have had to get it fixed plus pay for return shipping. He came out pretty good on the deal. I think we both did well on the deal.

I agree with you. The only issue I would put on seller is that he did not test it before he shipped it. On my side, though...completely innocent. No reason why I should be out a dime.

Sounds like all good reasons for ME NOT TO SELL on Ebay. I always tried to be honest in my ads ,but most people do not read them. I sure don't need the hassle and expense of long distance returns.
I'm glad you didn't get stuck with bad merchandise either.
