Rusty tools

I have a lot of rusty tools. I lived in a poor situation where I had to keep my tools in a barn with wide temperature changes. I am going into a new situation where my tools will be better housed. Problem is, how do I clean them up? Particularly bad are the small driver bits. I have a couple of monkey wrenches and channels used in irrigation that are pretty rusty too. No matter what I did, short of having coated with oil, the rusted.

Thanks

10% feed store molasses mixed in 90% water leave it sit 14 days they'll come out like new,if they're bared to metal they'll likely need to be cleaned up and painted

Will molasses from the grocery store work the same??? Will it eat the chrome finish also or a machined finish? just wondering..gobble

I saw my father in law do it before, you could try grocery store molasses I'm not 100% sure it would work the same as there different. He said if the paint is already rusted off the bare metal will look like new but also rust like unprimed metal.

I would use vinegar. Just put tools in vinegar deep enough to cover. Stir around every couple of days and in a week or so they should look better.

JimS,

Depends on several things:

1. Size of piece.
2. Condition (oily, painted, etc.)
3. How much rust on piece.
4. Temperature during cleaning, etc.
5. Strength of solution as it gets depleted.

Keep checking it.
I used this on steel alloys only; not sure what it would do to brass or non-ferrous materials that may be attached.

Store molasses should work just fine. I buy a 5 gal pail from the feed store. I wish I had found this rust remover years ago. You heard the slowing as molasses. Stan

Use one of the 20% off coupons from Harbor Freight and get a gallon of Evapo-Rust. Soak overnight and rust will be gone. Just used two gallons de-rusting various parts of an old John Deere planter I am resurrecting. Good stuff, not an acid and environment safe.

Vinegar works so well I use nothing else. Leave it in for several days, slosh it around every day, brush off the black stuff, and you have gray metal or black metal, with no rust at all. Be prepared to rinse it and dry it and hit it with spray red primer spray paint.
