Today I went with my son's Trail Life Troop to cash in some cans for a fund raiser, saw this truck parked at the yard, looks like it has sat there a while. I always have to wonder, if scrap is their livelihood why do they leave stuff like this sit around--glad that they did but just pondering...

once stopped at a place and asked the guy if the machine was for sale. In a rather gruff manner he told me no in very certain terms. I said, sorry, but I had just seen it unmoved for years. He said, "well everything has to be somewhere!"

Great pic, thsnks for sharing!
Driving thru Mississippi once saw an old tandem axle crane truck sitting outside a business. Bashed from just about every direction then looked like it was rolled 3 times. It was parked on a patch of grass, with the lawn carefully mowed around the truck so as not to disturb it. Business owner came out as i was taking a picture.
Yes, it runs, he said. We still use it.
He then gave my wife and me a tour of abandoned steam-powered sawmill out back. I remember the trees growing up through that place and the giant sawblade still waiting for its next log.

Scrap was a decent business back in the day- then prices went down, guy quit selling and waited for price to go up. Truck sat while they waited. One thing led to another, and it ended up sitting forever. Stuff like that sitting all over the country.

I have a few pieces of old iron around. You never know when one will have a piece that will save a trip to town. I know a guy that used to get every old car, truck or whatever. Most was given to him for hauling it away. He has close to 40 acres piled up. He told me that was his retirement. Whenever he needs a little money he hauls a load to the scrapper. He also sells on Ebay. He is never without money in his pocket.

farmerjohn,

It's a great photo!

If you go back there when the grass is green and the trees are leafing-out... please snap another. :)

Is that based on an old CCKW WW2 deuce and a half? If it is it's worth something. Not many of them left anymore.

I looked at a tractor one time with a tree grown through it. The old man told me it ran when I parked it there. It's just coasting now.

Another 5hing no one has mentioned that this is a home made cab. The truck most likely had the canvis top cab with just a windshield.
