Was socializing with some friends, he took me out to his barn to show me the JD 4015 he was working on fixing up for farm use
Said it was off the production line at the very start of the 4020's but still had the hp of a 4010...so he calls it a 4015..lol.
I am not a JD guy but, through following the forums am aware of the 10 and 20 series JD's...

So is he full of it or were there some production 4020's that still had the power of a 4010...?

I didn't question him much as I am not the correct police and he was very excited...
So I figured I'd ask here.

Also. Said it smoked like crazy on startup but ran good and generally cleaned up as it ran.

sounds like BS to me i was working for local JD dealer when the 4020s came out never heard off any like that. i Would bet somebody dumped a 4010 engine in it to get it gone

That's about what I figured.
Never know though...like I said...not a JD guy myself...most important; he is happy with his project.
Never know though...

I would bet that he has got a JD 4020 GAS tractor that had a JD 4010 engine installed in it. There never was any JD 4015 sold.

There is also the "urban legend" of a few very late 4010's leaving the factory as 4020's and retaining the 10 series PTO and axles. There was one "4020" around that this was supposed to be the story for it. That JD decided to send them out with 4020 pistons and sleeves but discount them for having other 10 series features.

He is pretty much full of it... BUT it should be noted that the '64 4020s were a bit more like the 4010 then those that followed. They still had the fat injectors, instead of the pencil type; no differential lock; a wiring harness that was changed for the '65 season, etc. The '64's and '65's also still had the oil bath air cleaner like a 4010... and so the 4020 was re-tested at nebraska in '66 with the dry type element. That test did show more horsepower than the earlier test, which was more than a 4010, but not as much as the later 4020s.

My brother has a late 4010 he put a 71 4020 engine into it. He did this 12 to 15 yrs ago and always called it a 4015. Both were diesels. Still uses tractor today for odd jobs etc

We had 1964 4020 wheatland diesel powershift. It was like you described. Don't know if its fact or not but I thought I read or heard somewhere the early 4020 powershifts had the same drawbar hp as the 4010 due to the parasitic losses of the powershift.
