Hearing aids

Wife says I can't hear worth a darn--got my hearing checked a few years ago, came home with a spoon--wife said what's that for, Doc said to give to the people you talk to get the marbles out of their mouths--didn't go over to good. Good luck-----Tee

I have an uncle 87 years old and has been deaf for most of his life. He tried hearing aids but they didn't work for him. Last fall my wife found a thing at Walmart for 30 bucks that amplified 30 times according to the box.. Found in the seen on tv aisle so it. Didn't sound like much but she got him one. It made him like a young man again as far as hearing people. Now he talks more and can hear a lot better. He went and bought another one and charges one while he wears the other. I would try one of them if you can find it. Lots cheaper if it works for you. Good luck.

I'm on my second set. My opinion: They ALL say how they can improve hearing and sound "natural" but none do. Don't go with the cheapies if you don't have to. My first set were Siemens, $2000 each. My hearing deteriorated until they could not amplify enough. My current set are Starkey at $3000 each. Fortunately my employer paid for them. I can hear more sound but still have to do a lot of lip reading and they're terrible on the phone or anything from a speaker. Find a good audiologist. You don't just plug 'em in and go. It takes a lot of office visits to get them adjusted and programed.

Don't know the first thing about them, except..... we can buy the latest computer, with processers, all the electronics, speakers, wiring, etc. for a few hundreds. How in the world can a little amplifier with micro-battery cost thousands?

About 4 years ago I bought hearing aids from Bel Tone. I absolutely love them. It was some of the best money I have ever spent. These were not cheap. I think they cost $6800 They were the best ones they made at the time. They have a life time warranty on every thing except batteries. Even if your hearing changes (as it will as you get older) It is covered. I had a hearing test again about a year ago & they adjusted them for me for free. I think the best advice I could give you is DON'T buy cheap ones. You will hate them. I know there are people that will tell you they bought some for $250 or $500 & they will tell you they like them but go at least try some high dollar ones verse the cheap ones & you will clearly see (I mean hear) the difference.

I doubt anything off the shelf will be much good.

But do be aware, the big names that flood the newspapers with full page ads, with promises of prices starting at $700... Are nothing but bait and switch criminal fraud!

One took my elderly Mom for $8000 because she doesn't understand there are those that will take advantage!

I am a Viet Nam Veteran and got mine through the VA at no cost. They give me batteries and ear piece filters free of charge also. Lost one and they replaced it and had one quit, mailed it in to VA, and had it fixed and back in a week or so. They don't cure all the hearing problems, but they sure do help a lot.

I too got mine form the V.A. but was told not to wear them around loud noises so 99% of the time I do not wear them show how or another tractor engines even with mufflers on them make to much noise to have them in

The March 2017 Issue of Consumer Reports has a great article including ratings of retailers. If you don't have it maybe a friend or library has it.

My Mom is 92. Cutting to the point she needed a hearing aid replacement as hers was 10 years old and her hearing had changed a lot. The audiologist offered her a range of 5 choices, she picked the middle model at $2700. She explained the difference in the models were essentially their ability to reject the background noise. The cheapest had no rejection. The more expensive models had increasing electronics and algorithms to reject background noise.

As I see it, you're paying for both the electronics and the software algorithms to reject the background noise.

I got mine from VA also. The doc told me to wear them every day. If I run grinders or other loud tools with a whine, he said to wear muffs. Mine are Phonak brand and I love them. My first set were the large "in the ear" type, and I didn't like them very well, got new ones in June '16, "the behind the ear" type. they are much better.

Audiologists will make aa lot of promises, like trials but watch the restocking fee could be $1000. They will promise a lot but if the ones you choose aren't right or you don't like them the return or exchange fee could be kinda big. Get it in writing.

The ones I have are the behind the ear type but for every day life I have found I can do with out. But when I had my hearing checked due to ring in the ears I was told to come in and get hearing aids so I did but I have found at least at this point IO can get by with out them

Here's a link to the article. It looks like you cannot get to the ratings without subscribing.

As others have said, do your research, many makes and models. Read the reviews for each. Use a reputable audiologist not just someone who sells hearing aids. In my experience they are mainly in it for the money and will sell you the most expensive when there is something far less expensive and does the same thing. Make sure you have a good warranty and understand what you are paying for. Mine have five settings for different environments. I also use a free app on my iphone that allows volume adjustment. Even allows streaming from the iphone or TV which is sometimes convenient when watching TV with the wife. Determine what your needs are before your buy. Once you get use to them you'll like them.

Wonder what it actually COSTS to manufacture a $6800 "audio device", plus a reasonable markup???

Get them from a local audiologist. When they give trouble, and they WILL give trouble at some time, you can easily stop in to see him and usually walk back out fixed up again.

I went to an audiologist, bad hearing went in to the job I had retired from 2 yrs ago filed a claim,
SAIF Drs. agreed. Saif awarded me lifetime hearing aids and batteries and a settlement. Best thing I ever did, I hear things I don't ever remember hearing. I can have TV turned way down. I've drove same pickup for 23 yrs. and never knew it had a seatbelt buzzer. Do what you have to they are a blessing.

I got my Starkey Halo 2 i2400 hearing aids from VA in November. They work along with my IPhone. Volume control is great on them (either from IPhone or control on ear pieces. I can talk on my phone from my hearing aids, they have control for being in crowds that will pick up primarily only the noise directly in front of you if you want. I never even began to realize how much I needed them till I got them, now I put them in when I get up in the morning and take them off when I go to bed. People don't even know I have them on (they're behind the ear but pretty darned small and I have short hair) Before I got them I kept the tv volume up really high, now the wife has to turn it up so she can hear it. In short, I like them and would highly recommend them to anyone that has hearing loss. My hearing loss is 50% hearing and 10% tinnitus. Keith

Starkey connected to phone since last September. Still amazed at some of the sounds, like the sound of the potato chip bag crinkling when you pick it up. Really like the feature that connects it to phone! I have a good audiologist that doesn't mind explaining the details of how things work instead of just saying "this is what you need"

They say I need them but I hear too much sound already. All the noise blocks out what people are trying to say to me. I am NOT sticking something in my ears. If my wife would speak to me when in the same room everything would be fine. She insists in talking to me when she is in the bathroom or facing the wall someplace, plus the dog always starts yapping when she speaks. Thousands of dollars, you have to be kidding.
