IH 574 Brakes

I've replaced almost every brake part on this tractor and still nothing. So I replaced the master cylinders and just marginally better. So I've been reading all the forums about the brakes on this tractor. So I got a tank from a later module and plumbed it in ( I also removed the equalizer valve). Now everything bleeds good and the pedals are hard, but the right side is not releasing and is dragging, you can feel it even when your driving it. Any thoughts.

Hi, is it possible that there is now to much pressure on the brake hydraulic circuit when the brake pedals are not pressed? There used to be screens with restrictors in the hydraulic supply lines to the master cylinders to prevent excessive pressure/flow to the master cylinders. This restrictor allowed the brakes to release.

I made sure that their was a filter and a small orifice restrictor in the supply line to the tank. I'm currently thinking that I need to enlarge the return line going into the transmission. It currently has a 5/16 line, but the tank has a 1/2 line, I had to reduce it down to make it work.

I remember a discussion on this forum a few years ago from an old IH Mechanic from the UK that said in the early days of the 74 series tractors that there was a problem with the brakes dragging and the solution was to install the restrictors.

If you look at the pedal attaching point there is a cam for adjusting the pedal level so they can be the same height is it bottoming on that or the travel. Another words is the piston able to completely return or hanging up out just a bit.

Hi Jim and others, I work on Manitou fork lift trucks and they used 84 seres transmissions on some machines. Had one with brake problems that would not bleed up on left side so I draind transmission nearly empty and found oil leaking out of the side of a porous transmission casting and had to fit a good used one. Hi Micheal, good to hear from you. Hope all is well in the UK.
Did CIH give Manitou the almost reject castings? I have seen that done by other companies.

All the best
Jim

Caterpiller guy you were right. I pulled the master cylinders back off and now see the cams you were talking about and the one side that was dragging wasn't releasing back all the way. Got it adjusted now. Now I'm waiting on a gasket for the speed transmission cover I removed to enlarge the return line from 5/16 to 1/2. Hope this takes care off it. Thanks to everyone who replied. Jim
