I bought one back when they first became popular, late 1980's. Used it a few times and then put it up on a shelf and forgot about it (too many other things to do).

Today, raining and thunder setting in and I thought about the Bread machine. Pulled it off the shelf and cleaned it up. Plugged it in, added ingredients and the dang thing worked. Now, cooking my second loaf (Italian bread).

That Bread machine is close to 30 years old and still works like the first day I bought it.

BTW, I still prefer making bread the homemade way but, this is a nice break from tradition.

Swmbo has one, gets used maybe couple times a year. Nothing better than fresh baked bread steaming hot slathered in butter!!!!

We bought one some time in the 90's , big disappointment ! Never care much for the bread that came out of it . so ours has been on "the self" too. It takes some time to make bread the real way, even though my wife is a very good cook , there never seems to be enough hours in a day to make bread any more. My mama made bread twice a week , and pie three times a week ,but didn't go to the barn , or have a off farm job. Times have changed .

Half the bread we have comes out of our machine. The other half is heavy rye bread baked by our neighbour's from Germany. Both are great, and I'm getting heavier as proof! Ben

Have had one too for a long time, don't use it much. This may help get it out, love the smell of bread baking.

I make at least a couple of loaves a week every week with mine. I've worn one machine out and the second one is showing wear too. Next to the microwave oven it is probably the most used item in the kitchen for me.

I have used one some. Never liked the odd shaped loaves they made. My "secret" is to use the machine to make, knead, and raise the dough on the "dough only" setting. Then I put the dough into a conventional loaf pan and bake it in the oven. This method makes a much better loaf.

jimg.allentown- Now they make Bread machine loaf pans like you descibe. I guess a lot of people felt the same as you and I.

The machine or the traditional way, fresh bread is always a treat. I used a nice bread machine years back, can't remember how many different kinds of bread, most of the common types, it made the mushroom head/odd shaped loaf, but the bread was perfect in my opinion. Across the road from me, fresh bread, muffins etc. are baked daily. It has been that way since the 1930's. Sure is something to appreciate, and you can enjoy the aroma sometimes early in the morning.

OK, that tears it. I'm gonna do it! I'm reaching up on the shelf above the cabinets and getting mine down. I'm gonna make bread. Well - to be frank I'm gonna toss ingredients in the tub, close the lid, and watch the magic.

I bought it 20 years ago, made 3 or 4 loaves, really liked it without preservatives and then my wife put it away. This is the impetus I needed to get back in bread biz.

I love a hearty cracked wheat loaf, warm, no preservatives, crusty top. yummmmmm

MIL has one... and likes to make bread for holiday meals. I don't know the brand of breadmaker.

It's very good. Not as good as a crusty homemade bread... but still very good.

The wife and I used a bread machine for a little while and then went back to doing it by hand.
Speaking of making bread, something that we still use is a Pyrex bread tube. It's a glass Pyrex tube that you bake bread it for some excellent results. Examples are still being sold on ebay.

I think we have bought 2 or 3 loaves of bread in the last four years since we bought a good bread machine. I give kudos to my wife for keeping it loaded....I think she can mix the ingredients in her sleep :D

I use it for dough also....hoagies, buns, prune biscuits, cinnamon rolls....now I am getting hungry!

We had one from Costco, used it all the time when the kids were home. But now they're long gone, wife doesn't eat much bread and I shouldn't, so we no longer make it. I think she gave the machine to one of the kids.

My wife is a sucker for new gadgetry. Years ago when bread machines first came out, she wanted one for Christmas. So I bought her one. She used it once and decided it was easier to buy bread at a grocery store.

We finally got rid of it on an auction we had after my mother passed away. It had still only been used once.

Gambles, the first thing we EVER bought from E-Bay was one of those tubes. We live in Ioway and it came from Washington State, wrapped in cardboard and both ends of the 'box' gone. Opened the mailbox and there it was, unbroken! A tribute to our Postal Service and it IS a neat, useful item. Our automatic bread maker made loaves that were very dense so now it's sits in the storage room downstairs. I'm not supposed to have bread, either.

The wife's got two of'em. One's sitting on the counter right now. She made some French bread with it yesterday.

Make 1-2 loaf's a week. Using a freebe a friend gave me. Have 2 others sitting the the pantry. One is the wife's and the other belonged to my folks. Gave used ones we pick up at auctions to all the kids, and they are actually using them also

When they were first becoming popular the head of the local electric co-op opined that he hated those things. Despite power outages becoming less frequent, the co-op was getting more complaints. When the VCRs and digital clocks became popular people getting home from work would realize that the power had hiccuped during the day, but no big deal. When they came home to a soggy mess in their bread machine they called to complain.

I got one 2 Xmas's ago. First couple of tries were just nasty - the Ravens took a few tries to eat the lumps. Figured it out and the next doz. or so were great. Put it aside for a while and tried again a couple of weeks ago -disaster. Wife has a loaf going now - hoping for the best - smells yummy.
