I was at Ed's Machinery Auction site today. He has a fifty foot wide cantilevered gate to his lot. The gate is hung on a combine final drive and electric powered to open and close. So to those of you wanting a automatic gate here you go. LOL

Looks like they used the axle tube also, think they packed the top/outer bearing with grease since it won't get any oil?
 
Cool idea. We have plenty of things run off center drive sprinkler motors too. Lots of torque due to the high gear reduction and completely sealed and weatherproof. Wonder if that is still a three phase motor or retrofitted to single phase.
 
Looks like the power drive is an afterthought. Did they push it around by hand first? Looks like the counterweight was added later too. I'm wondering if the red car is out of range?!
 
The car is in the road. The yard was close as it was a Sunday. They had some sensors mounted on the fence besides where the car is setting. It looks like they either stop the gates motion or watch for anything in the road.
 
That wouldn't stop anyone from getting in. A pair of needle nose pliers and pop the master link off the chain and swing it by hand.
