Tractor cab question

Help! I'm new to the tractor world.

My wife and I run a non-profit ministry in Bismarck ND using our horses to work with kids with special needs. Anyway ... we got a 1962 John Deere 3010 tractor with loader and grapple hook donated to us - but it has no cab. It gets pretty cold up here.

What do you all recommend? Are there after market cabs (new or used) that will fit my 3010? Our local RDO John Deere dealer will install one if I can find one. I also noticed a local had an old Excel cab taken off of a 4020 for giveaway - would that fit my 3010?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

It shouldn't be too hard to modify the
4020 cab, maybe not prefect sealed up
but out of the wind atleast. I fit a
Ford 8000 cab onto our 650 Ford tractor

Pretty much any after market cab can be made to fit depending on how fussy you are about sealing up all the dust leaks. I doubt they are
still in business but the best cab at the time I wanted one was built by "Cozy" to fit the 930 Case. Back in 1978. Expensive but quality cab
that was a close fit without much extra work around the dash to seal it up.

I agree with getting a new heat houser. These old cabs are getting to be pretty much junk unless you find a rare nice one. You also won't have heat with a cab unless you plumb it in. Cabs can be a real pain on these older tractors. The heat houser you just take off in summer.

Both the "Hiniker" and the "Year-around" tractor cabs were built right here in Mankato Mn. I worked in Research and development for the Hiniker back in the 70s. The Hiniker and the year-around are very similar and the
basic cab of each brand is common to all makes and models. The difference is the mounting brkts. and the filler plates need to be specific to model. I think if you put a wanted add you would get all kinds of responses
as people who are collecting and restoring those tractors are taking the cabs off and putting the fenders back on to have them original. Does your tractor have the fenders on yet? If so you will find someone who will
gladly trade his 3020 cab for your fenders. I would hold out for a cab from a 3020 as there has to be hundreds of them out there and then it is a simple process to mount it on your tractor and have a perfect fit.

You are not too far from Anamoose, ND. Take a drive up north of you to Pete's Tractor Salvage. He should have DOZENS of cabs that will fit your 3010.

Also, the 4020 cab should fit, backs can be different if made for a 3-point tractor or not, if you have a 3-point you will need to find a cab for a 3-point tractor.

If you don't find what you want at Pete's, post a want ad on Bisman. There have got to be some cabs around your area...

Well no a local resident of the neighbor hood , BUT the four times i have been to Bismarck and on up to Stanton i had wishe i had my check book and a empty trailer and you should not have a problem finding a cab or a donor tractor where you either by the one for the can and then sell the tractor OR if the one you find is a better tractor that does not have loader then ya put the loader on the one with the cab and sell the other . An yep it do get cold out there as the one time i was out there in mid May the weather here had broke and i took ALL my winter clothes out of the truck other then one hooder sweat shirt one light long sleeve and my carrhart vest , Left home here in the buckeye and ran the A/C all the way out to Bismarck , when i got there it was 94 degrees and windy , so i shut the truck off and left the windows open and went in and had supper at the truck stop then into the lounge and enjoyed a relaxing evening talking with locals and enjoying a couple cold ones When i opened the door to go out to the truck to go to bed there was a small temp drop and it was now 28 degrees with a shut down truck with windows open , That was around 11:30 Pm . Do you know how long it takes a semi to warm up and how long it takes to warm the cab and bunk up . I got 3 1/2 hours of sleep before i had to head up to Stanton . and had i had to go just 10 more miles north i would have been in 3-5 inches of SNOW . But i would see lots of older tractors setting in my travels out there .

I just wonder if those would work given the tractor has an after-market loader and grapple hook. Would the canvas have to be cut around the arms so they can move?

The canvas fits between the tractor and the loader. The side entry door can swing past most loaders, rear entry is still possible too.

If you're handy, it's really not hard to make your own. My first cab I made out of 2x4's, plexiglass, and plywood for about $150. The biggest investment was the plexiglass, clear vinyl would have saved a bundle.

I think you'll find that heating isn't nearly as important as blocking the wind. Once you've blocked hte wind, the gradual heat from the engine and yourself will make the cab very tollerable. I spent 6+ hours in mine in 0-5F outside temps with nothing more than 2 pants, good boots, a down jacket, and a hat. Inside the cab was easily 20-30F above outside temps.

If you're water cooled, $150 for a cab heater off ebay, runs off a 5/8" hot water line.

Heat houser cabs are available new for under $300, with plastic front and side windows and a hinges side door, just like Kansas 4010 has shown but for the additional windows.

I've been on open station, heat houser and cab tractors in zub-zero weather. I'll take a cab any day! Even without heat. You will eventually get a wind that blows in from from the back of a tractor with a heat houser and you may as well be open station at that time.
