Tractor reverse speeds

Hi folks ! I have that 7 foot blower I had fixed up still on my Farmall 300. Took it out tonight to clean the drive. We didn't have much deepest was probably 4 inches. I had planned on running it with an oliver 1755 but we have had such a mild winter so far I havent made the swap. When using the 300 reverse with the torque pulled back is way too fast. Not for the snow I was blowing but for me. Just wondering if some of the utility tractors around 60 HP. Have slower reverse speeds such as a 4000 or 5000 Ford. I can always use the 1755 but have to.keep it outside and a utility I can keep inside. Might be looking for another tractor for this chore. This is the first blower I have ever owned.

Most tractors with a two range transmission, that is without a shift on the go, will have a slow reverse, about 1 mph, and a fast reverse about 4 or 5 mph, either of which is too fast or too slow! Ben

I think he is talking about a newer utility. A 300 is pretty slow in reverse with the torque back. You probably need a hydrostatic transmission. Can go any speed you want.

Our JD 4600 has a 12-12 power reverser. 3 ranges, a syncro 4-speed, and a reverser for all of them. I'm surprised, it's not idiot proof, it would go 16 mph in reverse. I thought some older tractors had a way to prevent going too fast in reverse. As much as I dislike hydrostatics, that would be my choice for something like a snowblower.

If up for some mechanic work put the slowest first gear installed in a 504 and a couple of others in it. Also slows reverse. If trying to win slow races put the farmall 504 ring gear and pinion shaft in also.

seems to me case dropt the ball on the 70series power shifts ,. my 1070 has 4reverses and all of them are toodam fast ,.hi range is 15mph , IN REVERSE !! now granted the later ones lokt out hi range reverse ,.however 1st range reverse is far toofast ,,. good thing the inch pedal feathers very well,.all the 30 series triple range low range is slow reverses very well

Yes technically it is "CaseIH Farmall 65A" No more sending the kid to the shed to get the "B" like my Dad did. You practically have to wright it down now as they all have such long complicated name and number.

I really like our 6070 Allis Chalmers with three ranges for blowing snow. Middle for lighter and low for heavier snows works great.

Check tractordata dot com. they list speeds for a lot of tractors.

Guy I do a lot of work for has an LS 50 hp tractor
has 4 gear ranges with 4 gear trany with shutle F/R giving it 16 forward and reverse speeds
1/3 mph in r1g1 at pto speed (2450rpm) upto 18 mph in 4r4g so lots of options to choose for speed
with a cab n heat its my go to tractor in the winter for snow blowing
mostly though I use my 87 K10 with 7' plow for snow clearing

MOST tractors go faster in the slowest reverse gear than in the slowest forward gear and MOST tractors lacking a creeper gear go too fast in reverse to operate a snowblower taking a full cut in heavy snow without slipping the clutch.

(PLEASE don't shoot the messenger, I'm just telling it like it is.)

white 2-150 is slowest reverse tractor i have, so i have it on snowblower. 2' snow and that blower will lug that tractor down to half throttle, just trying to blow fluffy snow, dont understand it! its a 8' blower, 1000rpm, when i got it it had the big 1000rpm pto on it, and im thinking why did they have such a big tractor on it (200+)hp, changed it back to small 1000pto to fit tractor

Depending on your budget, 84 series IH and up can go slow in reverse.

Most 8-speed MFs have a stupidly slow low reverse.

I ran a 78" snow blower on a MF 240 and it was sped perfect for snowblowing, just needed more power.

I used a 7' 2stage snow blower on a 185 Massey (540PTO), and when full throttle in low reverse was good for about a foot of moderately light snow. More than that and you'd have to feather the clutch for a first pass and then take a half pass at a time. I can't imagine using a blower (or rototiller) on something without a 2 (or 3) speed secondary gearbox. IIRC, Oliver/White made some good 'creepers' too.
