for a quote up front. I dropped off an Allis loader bucket cylinder at the repair shop last Friday and told them to put seals in it for me. I went to see if they had it done today and they did...$245! I said that much for seals? He said the rod was a mess and they had to re-chrome it. It had looked fine to me. Anyway after some grumbling about calling me first he says "yeah the shop got ahead of themselves I guess." He said he would drop it to $100, I agreed to that, figuring I should cut my losses...Oh, and they painted it Kubota orange for me...thanks a lot!

That wasn't out of line with the re-chrome,, and many times a seal will soon fail because the chrome was bad,,then the cylinder comes back to the shop with a customer upset because it failed too soon...it can lead to bad feelings if the cost is not discussed first..

That's quite a drop from $245 to $100!
You did well.

Sounds like a place I would go back to for future work.
............ guess you could discuss the paint color ahead of time.

Well the last one they did for me was only $22 and they did it while I waited...guess I should have waited for this one. When I dropped it off he remarked that it looked bent.....didn't to me, and no mention of that when I picked it up...just 225 labor and 20 for seals...

I think he knew they screwed up when I asked for seals and they went for an expensive repair without calling first....

Took a rear tractor rim and center to a guy I consider to be a friend- he does heavy hauling and mechanic work on the side- I know hauling has been slow, and he may be having some financial difficulties. But I needed the center separated from the rim from an MF 135. 6 bolts, I don't have a big enough impact wrench. When I came back for it- 80 bucks! None of the bolts/nuts showed any sign of heating or even penetrating oil. Had he not been a friend, I'd have raised heck- but I just swallowed hard and made a mental note- go to the tire shop next time. I'll bet it would have been 15 or 20 dollars there.

You made out ok, I dropped a metric/European 4"x30" off with
150$ of seals and it took 1150$ of machine work and labour -
new rod, new barrel and tons of machining to get it back.

Not impressed.

Just got a loader cylinder back from shop.
I bent it trying to lift a motor off a
combine. Had a 3 point cat 2 boom chained
in the bucket. $125 they made a new rod.
Off a 480E Case. Oh bent the boom also.
Motor was just stubborn.

I just dropped off a tractor alternator today for bearing, regulator, and complete check up. It was a 10 SI. I didn't ask for a quote but I know it
won't even be as high as a reman (and those are only $45ish).

When I took the generator off my 35 Chevy in he went through it and put in new bearings and checked it all out. It needed wires from the guts
soldered on to replace the cloth covered ones that exit for the cutout. It wasn't $35. I have no problem supporting them. They are a mom and
pop who knows their stuff. They only deal in checks. When was the last time a business had the guts to turn away anyone with plastic? That's
trust and integrity.

Eldon we had a similar situation years ago fellow did same as you. Shop owner said let me see the bill, looked at it and said oh yes I forget the ring of bolts and labor !!! Crossed it out and wrote $300 on the bill. Asked if you had any more questions??

Next time tell the shop it's not for a working tractor, just an old yard tractor. They will do the "just enough to get by cheap" repair instead of fixing it to work another 40 years.
