Tractor Hydraulic Fluid for Oliver

Apologize if this topic has been beat to death here. Went to my local Tractor Supply for hydraulic oil. I was interested in the TSC Universal Hydraulic oil but of-course they were sold out (which is a common problem at my local TSC ... not maintaining stock of items associated with their namesake ** T r a c t o r S u p p l y **). I need hydraulic fluid for 50 Series Olivers.

Is their Universal Hydraulic Oil the correct type for these tractors? For older tractors they also sold '303 Super S' fluid, would that work? - thanks

For just the hydraulics, a universal will work yes. I use a HyTran type just because I need it in the big White and I don't want to keep two kinds around. I wouldn't use it in the trans/rear end or in the HydraPower.

Use anything that meets the spec for JD Hy Gard or Case IH Hy Tran. This way you do not have to worry about cross contamination. I knew a fellow from college years ago that his dad caused extensive damage to an IH 706 because so much oil migrated from the Oliver and whatever else they had that the 706 looked like it had Dextron by looking and smelling what they drained out of the transmission sump. The risk of major failure is not worth the few bucks saved by using any oil. When we baled with the JD 347 baler with 30 ejector we never bothered keeping separate oil around because we did not want one of the cousins to put a purpose specific oil by accident into a tractor transmission case. It's easy to say that it will never happen or that I am more meticulous than most but that day always comes when we are in a hurry then a few months goes by and something bad happens. In the case of the 706 the transmission was howling like a freight train.

Thanks, I'll probably get the HyTran -- I know that is good stuff. Yes, figured I should stay away from the '303' which just said for older tractors but had no spec numbers on the label.

I use the Traveller ISO 46 from TSC in mine. The 303 is a cheaper but I recall reading that it's for tractors that have brakes running in the fluid. I use their Trans-Hydraulic in the Ford.
