Good morning. Does anyone know what size socket I'll need to remove the rear axle nut on my Model M? Really need to replace the seal before time to put her to work again.

There are 2 different size nuts that may of been used as JD had an updated axel shaft. The nut is large enough as you should be able to use a measuring tape to figure it out.

I would be more interested in how your going to get axel out of the cast wheel center. Your going to need a press to get them apart. My 20 ton shop press would not budge mine. I had to take it to another place and use there 50 shop press.

But ........ does the wheel need to come off the axle?

I seem to remember taking it apart from the inside out, and leaving the wheel hub on the axle.

Measured the rear axle nut on "Sparky" our 51M and it requires a 1 13/16" socket.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I had to take it apart from the inside too as I could not get the center off. It will need to come apart to replace the seal as this is why I took mine apart.

I guess I am lucky I have a 47 M & I installed two 10x24 allis combine wheels & tires on it after I cut a 17.5 hole in the dish wheels.
I needed to remove one cast center so I could locate & drill the 4 9/16 mounting holes. After I removed the Nut I placed a screw jack between
tractor case & cast center. Gave the axle a rap with a Piece of White Oak & a 6 pound hammer, 2 blows it came off...

Thank you. That saves me a 22 mile roundtrip to measure it....parts store is about 1/2 mile from here. Now comes the fun part...taking the nut and wheel off.
