My brother works for a company that gets some of their brass stock from China. He told me that 2000 manufacturers around Beijing got shut down because pollution is too bad, will have to wait to get parts until foundries start back up. I guess there is a pollution level that they stop at, and another that they start production at.

Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rooster - begins today, Saturday January 28 and lasts until February 15th, 2018. Lots of celebrations and fireworks, in addition to the factory, foundry and automobile pollution already in the air.

David I spent 8 days in Beijing 14 thru 21 of this month. Smog was no problem and at that time there were some plants planning on shutting down for new year but that is a normal thing this time of year. In the last 4 years they have really made a lot of progress on air pollution in and around that city.

More likely lots of visitors and television coverage are the reason they shut down the factories. If you don't see the problem it doesn't exist.

I was in Beijing in 2006. When I landed the pollution was so bad the air was brown. It was hot and the taxi didn't have air but you couldn't open the windows because the air was so bad. Other days were much better. I think it varies day by day.
