Local craigslist has an ad with an AC 170 gas and a diesel. $2k for the gas, $1k for the diesel. Both have loaders. No real info listed in ad. So, I assume the worst.
Friend is looking for a tractor. $6k budget, pretty mechanical guy.
Would use for brush mowing and moving logs in his woodlot and general chores and plowing snow. . Not a farmer. Just a guy with property and woods to maintain.

My knowledge is in MF so i didn't know if anyone had any insight to these tractors.

Based on what I see...more engine parts/rebuilt kit etc... available for the gas engine.
But the diesel is a Perkins 236 which, I think, is common among several brands?

Stick with the MFs, those little Allises are a pain in the rear to get use to using on a rotary mower, no independent PTO so shifting to reverse to get in tight spots is where it is a major pain in my back side.

Lol. I don't think i will own anything other than an MF. Good insight for the non-ind pto.
I wasn't sure about the features of that gen AC.
That probably will not help my friend.

They are a great tractor if you understand how they work. I find the use of the power director for live pto to be an advantage...in an emergency situation you hit the foot clutch and it automatically kills the pto. Hydraulics are still live. I have 8 diesels, they are very economical to run, and since everyone runs them down I can get them cheap....and make lots of $$$$ with them. Thanks guys :D

Look on Albany, ny area craigslist.

Link to the gasser.
My friend is not experienced in utility tractor operation and the hand clutch pto is not going to be what he is looking for.
I emailed the seller earlier and did not get a response yet.

Used to have a 170 diesel with the Perkins. It was a very good tractor. Used it on every piece of equipment we had at the time except the 5 bottom plow. Pulled 3 14" with it just fine. Worked good on the 9' haybine, the baler, rake and tedder. Plenty of power to do what I wanted. The power director is not hard to get used to. Worked really good on the baler.

They have a very slow road gear and I don't think the brakes are the best. Other than that, was a good tractor. Started well in the winter with just a short time plugged in.

They are a nice little tractor, all but the PTO! I have my friends 185 here and I used it to mow some waterways between
the corn strips, in order to get in the little crannies I had to stop with the PD, then let the mower clean out step
the clutch down put it in reverse let the clutch out to get the mower going again, then use the pd to back up a few
feet to mow then repeat the process to go forward, not handy by all means. Other then that it is a nice little tractor,
handy to get on and off, easy to hook up implements since can reach the levers very handy from the back and is low down
for these hills! Just the PTO killed it for me to want to buy one.

I have a wd45 and a D17. I can shift from forward to reverse on both with just the hand clutch. But you have to shift quick and be completely stoped.

Power director on the 180/185 is hydraulic instead of mechanical. I can see it being more difficult to use...
