OT----Broadcast spreading of ryegrass seed

I have an area I would like to broadcast some ryegrass seed.
I have no way of disking it in but have heard some seeds will take hold without disking in.
However, I think birds will eat most of the seeds ??
Anyone had any experience with this?

I've done this many times with varying results. Timing is very important.

Depending upon conditions and climate, you might try winter seeding, e.g., February.

Never had a problem with birds myself. Maybe
cause the seeds are so small idk.in the Deep South
I've planted in prepared soil and also broadcast the
seed over natural grasses cut short. Prepared is
better of course but if the seed touches the earth it
will come up.ditto on the dragging something over
the area.i use about a third more seed when
planting on unprepared soil.

I just broadcast my ryegrass seed this year because I was short on time to do anything else. It's come up just about
as good as any other year when I would lightly disc. Cut any grass on the field short or let the cows graze it and then
broadcast. Anything you can drag over it will help but it's not absolutely necessary. Rainfall is the most important
item. Get enough and you will grow a good stand of ryegrass. Or at least here in SE Texas you will.
