Tractor Trivia

Saturday we have our local tractor club Christmas party. As I have done for the last several years I bring a bunch of tractor trivia questions for the guys to answer and win prizes. If any of you know any questions that I can ask the guys it would be greatly appreciated.

the opposite of everything else, not sure which way that is, never have gotten wrapped up in one, hope I never do! Why did they do that, they would of been a great little tractor to run the bale elevator with!

Which 1960's manufacturer used these trade name for their shift-on-the-go feature:
Torque-Amplifier, Ampli-Torque, Power Director, Multi-Power, Hydra-Power, Hydraul-Shift?
I think the answers are: IHC, Minneapolis Moline, Allis-Chalmers, Massey Ferguson, Oliver and Oliver.

You could add Power-Shift, Select-O-Speed, Case-O-Matic, and Hi-Low Shift to the list.

Which manufacturers used these trade names:

Case-O-Matic
Roll-O-Matic
Select-O-Speed
Draft-O-Matic

Extra credit for what each one does.

For extra credit, which of the manufacturers of those "innovations" ( Torque-Amplifier, Ampli-Torque, Power Director, Multi-Power, Hydra-Power, Hydraul-Shift) still survive without being taken over by another company?

Please correct any mistakes I may have made in these questions. Thanks!

What was the first tractor sold in the U.S. with a 3 point hitch? - Ford 9N (?) Who developed the 3 point hitch - Harry Ferguson.

What was the first tractor with the Farmall name - 1924 Regular Who made it? - McCormick-Deering

What was the first U.S. tractor to use hydraulics? - (I don't know this one.)

Have fun Saturday!

Which event boosted electric start of tractors?
World War II; women needed to drive farm tractors, while the men were enlisted.

John Deere A was first with hydraulics (power lift 1934). Mechanical power lifts were out there prior, but the A was first with hydraulic.

Who built the first Ferguson styled tractor? Which model is longer Farmall M or Farmall H? Which tractor company had the fist live PTO?

The M and H have the same wheelbase so mounted equipment will interchange. The M might be a couple of inches longer because of tire size. Can't answer the other two.

Case built 5 150 HP steam units and gave them to various people to test their viability. They had a two speed transmission that was the weak point and they never built more. None are know to exist, but one boiler was on display at the Rollag, Minnesota steam show. I have a book on a interview with one of the 150 hp operators in, I believe, North Dakotas

Which PTO, the Farmall Cub one? Yes, I think it does run at engine speed. Others are standardized at about 540 until you get up to newer and bigger tractors.

What manufacturer offered first fully-enclosed cab on its tractor--from the factory?

It was Minneapolis-Moline's "comfortractor" in 1938. Didn't do well, highly collectible now.

Would also be interested when AC first offered in tractor cabs if anyone knows.

(quoted from post at 08:27:35 01/19/17) Name the only John Deere tractor that the steering shaft went thru the fuel tank? The 1010.

Not true. Here's another one.

The H is said to be physically longer although the wheelbase is the same. David Brown and Harry Ferguson produced the Model A Ferguson Brown from '35 to '39 with the Ferguson designed 3 point hitch. The 1947 Cockshutt 30 is credited as the first tractor with live PTO to be tested at Nebraska.

Philco-Ford home electronics and washing machines...dryers too I guess...don't remember the dryer part...had the washer that agitated up and down, not back and forth. (maby industrial and military too) back in the '60's.

2 cylinder? Hart-Parr- the beginning of Oliver brand from designers Hart and Parr, developed at University of Wisconsin. Initial plan was to make them in Madison, Wisconsin but city council was putting up road blocks, wanting plant changes- about what current city council still does. Charles city, Iowa politicians said something like' we have a industrial park area, some electrical power available, water available and can have all the building permits signed a hour after you submit plans'.
A small later model of Moline(?) - the 4 and 6 cylinder engines had 2 cylinder 'sub cylinder blocks' with sets of 2 cylinder heads, the 2 cylinder engine was a short utility and row crop for specialty crops, engine and other castings made on same molds as larger engines that basicaly made a crankcase and crankshaft that had multiple 2 cylinder heads on multiple 2 cylinder sleeves and water jackets bolted to the crankcase like some continental engines into 1950s. Some place in archives is couple pictures of off yellow 2 cylinder tractor about same power as IHC H or maybe C with mower, MM model number. RN
