Ford 3000 Starter relay problem

Ive got a mid to late 70s Ford 3000 diesel....

I recently replaced the starter relay due to it being cracked. It had quit starting but I was able to jump start it at the relay to get some important things on the farm done until I got a new relay.

After I got my new relay in the mail and installed it I have a new problem. When I connect positive I get sparks and a noise that seems like the fuel pump or something (kinda a whining) Its not the starter making the noise. I have to immediately take the positive off.

I have triple checked my wiring to the relay and tried a couple different combos with same results. The only thing changed is the new relay.

Any help is greatly appreciated, the farm has projects stacked cause this thing is down.

The S Small terminal should go to the start button. The battery cable with second wire on it should go to the big relay terminal that does not have continuity to anything. the other big terminal should go the the starter. Jim

On many of the fords the solenoid have a battery side and starter side and if you get them mixed up it can and will do what your having happen

Yes I see you are correct and clearing up that little semantics issue will definitely solve the problem.

If Im understanding correctly that is how I have it wired. Are you referring to the starter button as the ignition?

The positive goes to the top left larger post with the small wire. I feel like its continuing from there which it should not like you said....

It is in the exact way the previous one was. If I turned it the opposite the big post wouldn't be able to have the positive battery wire hooked to it. I'll get some pics up today

Yeah I was referring to it wrong, its the solonoid. I'll get pics up today. Am I allowed to link a video to utube of what its doing? I know some forums thats not allowed. Im not sure how else to show a vid to yall

Ok the top pic is of the old solenoid and the bottom is new installed. Seems to be the same as old.

This is the one I bought...

The bottom right post is attached to the copper strip that goes to the block.
The bottom left is attached to the short wire coming out of the top the starter.
The top left large post has the positive battery cable and small wire I believe the ignition going to it.
There is a small tab on the top that a wire connects as well.

Im pretty certain I replaced everything the same way when I installed it...

Well that would make life easy if thats what it is....is there any way to confirm if its bad or not for sure? Would a bad ignition switch have anything to do with this?

You might try taking all the wires off. Then try hooking up the battery cable to it and if you get spark good chance it is bad. If not sparks try one wire at a time with the others and watch for sparks. If you get sparks make sure tha tire is not hot as in having voltage on it with ignition turned off

Well with the ignition turned off the smaller wires on the solenoid should no have any power at them but if any of them do good chance the ignition switch is bad or you have a short some place
