Peoria Stock Yards

This week Peoria Yards closed up. Spent many Sunday nights with Dad hauling hogs and cows in there. Lots of good memories Stockyards Farm Supply where you could eat free peanuts while you shopped, T.S.C. there too. Steak and Shake on way back home ,or A&W Root Beer. ..The Dick Herm Firm and Dick Herm on radio every Monday morning saying "Good Morning from the Bull Pen at the Peoria Union Stock Yards" I always sold through Dick Herm and got to meet him at his farm back in the 80's Just to think of all the millions of cows, pigs, and sheep that went through there since 1870's

I have strong memories of the Fort Worth stock yards back in the 40's. It was a mysterious place about midnight when I would ride in there with my brother with a load of cattle in his old 42GMC truck. I have seen a lot of changes in the last 80+ yrs some good, some not so.

Another landmark closed up. My memories are in the Sioux City stock yards. Dad sold cattle there but I forget the commission company he sold to. Wagner maybe? I remember walking the overhead catwalks to go look at dad's cattle. Now it's completely wiped off the map.

I was at the Chicago Stock yards when I was about 5 years old, must of been the same year my dad died of a heart attack. Remember being at a rodeo in there, being on top of the Tribune Tower and going to Fort Sheridan to see my older brother. 1954 I think.

Yep - I have good memories of the sale barn on Knob Hill in Colo. Springs, as well. Mostly, I remember the rancher's daughters as I was a teen myself at the time.

I know exactly what you mean ihcarl. Every Sunday night we'd make a trip up to Peoria to the stockyards. Getting those little notes on the settlement sheet from "The Dick Herm Firm" made a big impression on a kid. Dad or Grandpa would also park along side the big office building and we'd go downstairs and get a sandwich. The only bad memory i had on those trips was that old bridge in Pekin going across the river. It always scared the bejesus out of me!

I remember my first load into National Stockyards in East St. Louis and also my last load into Mississippi Valley in St. Louis, The last load was October 31, 1963

That's one other thing thats going all the little buying stations in towns. I can remember a lot of semis headed down the road with cattle. Also on buyers remember the straight trucks with the fold down ramps and gates hooked on the side and then getting cattle to go up the ramp?
One bright spot small scale slaughter houses are starting up again the meat has to be better then from cattle that are stressed out

Rember at 16 just being to drive legal. Took my first solo load of hogs to Indianapolis stock yard. I though I was in tall cotton!!

My dad and Dick Herm were very good friends. Remember going to Dick's farm for his personal "Steam Days". Was fun to watch the steam engines do the steep hill climb.
