Drywall repair

If you have an area that is rotted out because of getting wet the best fix would be to cut the entire area out and replace it with a water resistant sheetrock. It's easy to see in the store, the sheets are green instead of white. As far as tape and bedding the fast dry compound is more water resistant. It comes in powder form and you mix it with water as you use it. Some of it starts setting up in as little as 20 minutes.

dura-bond is the setting type water proof compound. you prolly wont be able to sand it once it sets, so get it close and skim coat it with regular drywall compound to finish it.

Drywall is not intended for use where it gets wet on a regular basis.

If at all possible, best to use cement board and tile, or cover the drywall with tile, or use fiberglass paneling.

If that is not practical, like Stephen said, the fast dry texture on green board. Then caulk along the bottom edge or anywhere water tends to stand or get into a seam, paint with exterior paint.

I agree, cement board, mesh fabric tape and durabond drywall mud in Brown bag ond only broen bag . When it sets up, it's waterproof. If you leave some mud in a bucket and fill bucket with water plan to throw bucket away. This mud will set up while under water. Better use the 90 Minute mud.

Any possibility that you can somehow find out and deal with the cause of the drywall getting wet in the first place? Years back, the drywall under our front window always took a beating in the winter due to the window icing and then melting onto the drywall, etc. The fix was to drop the humidity in the house (adjust the humidifier) so the windows didn't ice.

Is the drywall getting moisture from the front side or from inside the wall? If the drywall is getting wet from the back side it would be best to correct the source of moisture. Cement board over a wet wall will only mask the problem as the rot and mold spread further.

Not to be called Captain Obvious, buy your drywall shouldn't be getting wet.
Could your application use DensGlass? Sheathing by Georgia Pacific? Google it. It uses a fiberglass coating instead of paper.

You're a man after my own heart George.
Your suggestion is a good one amd exactly what I would do. Cept I pretty much use all hardee board now. Use the heavy gray mesh on the seams and skim it all out smooth.
I use a lot of Durabond in and around bathrooms and it's the best. You had better know how to mud though. The stuff is hard to sand.
