Summer 2017

Okay its new year and we are thinking about places to visit Aug/September 2017 (got to do all these things before we are too old). One place my wife has always wanted to visit is Macchu Picchu near Lima Airport(40 years married this summer so a little special for us). Anyway looking for your thoughts on this as a destination. Have any of you guys done this? Is there lots to do? How expensive? How safe? Would you recommend or discourage a visit?
Any advice or thoughts welcome.
Bill

Sounds like an adventure worth doing. End of August I am taking my kids and nephew to stand in the midfle of total solar eclipse. It will pass within 200 miles of us. I am told it is an experience not to be missed.

Where is that Macchu Picchu near Lima Airport? What country. I live about 15-20 mile from the City of Lima, Ohio USA and the airport is just southeast of town in my direction.

We all need to do some of these special things with the ones we love. Life is short and you can't take it with you. I'll bite, where is the epicenter of the total eclipse. Who knows maybe we can have a big party. Happy New Year to all. Jim

I think he means Lima Peru! Looks like a very interesting place!

I think it would be a great trip. At 2430 metres elevation it may take you some time to acclimate before you exert yourselves too much so plan accordingly if you don't have experience at that altitude.

My wife went there a few years ago.....she made the 4 day walk from Cusco to the Sunrise Gate in Macchu... you have to be in good health and physical condition to do so as some elevations were close to 10,000 feet. There are bus/ train tours to get to the site as well, but the walk was truly incredible, hers was organized through a tour group that provides porters, meals and facilities while you do the walk. Simply spectacular simply cannot describe it she says. You would be best to spend a few days in Cusco to reduce the chances of altitude sickness. It is a chance of a lifetime to go. She went with a mission group to Peru, promoting health and nutrition, and Macchu was a side adventure.I stayed home and farmed. :( Ben

Jim, according to the local news sometime back, St. Louis is in the path. Diagonal path across the US. I'm fairly close. Seen it as a kid, will see it again.

Hope the weather is good the day of your Solar Eclipse.
I was lucky enough to view one in Northern Canada on an island beyond Tuktoyaktuk NWT in about July of 1972.

It was a perfectly clear day at about 1:30 PM if I recall correctly.
We watched the sun through our welding helmets. The TOTAL eclipse was in a very narrow band, maybe 50 miles wide.

As long as there was still a sliver of sun showing, it was daylight.
When it got totally covered, it was like someone turned off the light switch!

It got totally dark; the stars came out. It was really weird; lasted maybe 5 minutes max.
It was extra special for us, because it was 24 hour daylight up there then!

A person is very lucky to see a TOTAL eclipse in their life time.
I've seen many partial eclipses, but only that one TOTAL eclipse.

You will remember it for the rest of your life.

Hi Bill
My neighbor lived in Peru for many years. Beautiful place but takes a while to get used to the elevation. She said a lot of people would get altitude sickness. Sounds like a great trip. You sound very adventurous.

Here is the path.
