My massey 30 needs to be hand cranked a
little and into a certain spot in order
to turn over with key, would anyone be
able to tell me what is wrong.

Hi, I would suspect the ring gear is chewed up in one spot. Good luck on that. Ed Will Oliver BC

If that is the model I think it is, the flywheel gear was pressed on from the back, and sometimes it would get pushed back to where the starter gear couldn't engage it.

Pull the starter, turn the engine and watch that the gear is seated fully against the flange on the flywheel. If it has worked back, carefully pry it forward on the flywheel a little at a time, working it against the stop flange.

This is more of a problem when running a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system.

Engines almost always stop in the same place and because of that the flywheel ring gear get one small area hammered over and over again which is turn cause burrs etc. Pull the starter off and have a look see at the ring gear and I'll bet you will find a bad area on it

I replaced the ring gear on my TO-20 this summer. It was a little chewed up but also pushed back on the flywheel. I had converted the charging system to 12v but left the starter at 6v. I greased the pilot and throw out bearings but left everything else as is.
