Got my free bin home

Nice day , 23 F , light breeze, full sun , perfect day for the job. Took little over a hour, went slick. Now I just need a boot and a auger, and I will be ready for the feed. Bin looked bigger some how beside the barn we picked it up from , must have shrunk on the way home. Looks tiny beside the old bank barn .

I thought it looked pretty good too . The owner had offered it to several guys , some came and looked at it , but couldn't seem to figure out home to get it home .Fella that had the bin wanted it gone , as he was done with it.

Show us some more photos of the bank barn please. We have almost none of those around here.

Here you go Richard , these are a few pictures of our old bank barns . I have posted these before , all of these old barns have stables below , and hay loft upstairs . The last picture is a look in the dairy stable in my home barn with the white feed bin. There are still hundreds of these old bank barns in our county , but we loose some every year.

Looks like a great deal. Post an up date when you pour the feet and put her back up. All good farmers should be expert scroungers!

I saw the first post and did I see a blow pipe on the side --?? was curious as to what was that bin used for in its former life --Roy from northwest Iowa

Not self feeders , but they are individual feed hoppers for each cow. The hopper can be adjusted to the cows production , and they are filled all at once with the flex auger. Once they are full the auger shuts off, and I just pull a lever and the feed drops to all the waiting cows at the same time. Saves me between a half hour and 45 minutes feeding time everyday.

My wife's grandfather built those hip roof barns but not that large and tall. You do what I hated the most around livestock, MILK!! Those cows don't have their thermostats turn up enough in the winter and too much in the summer. When I started farming, my dad brought a bull to put in the barn. Next thing the fence around the lot was gone along with the barn and a machine shed was there.

Is that a barn full of Jerseys? We used to see a couple different color herds through central MN. Now we just have a couple herds. Still a few Brown Swiss and Ayreshire sprinkled amongst the Holstein herds, but few.

Jerseys are long gone in any setups.

Yes the whole herd is Jersey . There are now 105 milking stalls in this barn , all Jersey . There are a few other Jersey herds in my county , one Ayrshire herd , one Brown Swiss , one Shorthorn , no Guernsey , and many Holstein . A lot of the Holstein herds have some Jersey cow also to raise their fat test .Several Holstein breeders cross their cows with Jersey to get cows with better components, something that once would have been unheard of . Jersey cows are in great demand , and have been for the last 4-5 years, as higher fat milk pays out so much better. I get frequent calls from folks wanting to buy cows, but it is tough to expand and sell replacements at the same time . Bruce
