GOOGLE EARTH shows almost perfect rows of vegetation, and in-between spaces of shrubs/trees/
What makes this pattern? Or the purpose?

People think King Ranch is a cattle outfit on hundreds of thousands of acres of Texas range land. Actually, its many thousands of acres of mostly crop land south of Houston. They have some cattle, but mostly row crops.

It's actually located near Kingsville, TX located between Corpus Christi & Brownsville. That's a long ways southwest of Houston, probably 300 miles.

King Ranch is currently 825000 acres running between 35 and 40 thousand head of cattle and several hundred horses. They originated the Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle and a great line of Quarter horses. If that doesn't make them a cow outfit I don't know what does. They do have an extensive farming operation also. At one time it was the largest ranch in the world I don't know if it still is or not. The north end of the ranch is about at Kingsville Texas which is 40 to 50 miles south of Corpus Christi. Tony

I would say you are right as they have 770,000 acres in pristine wildlife habitat. They are very big in hunting and exotic hunting with 12,000 nilgai (largest Asian antelope) on their land.

They also have big farms in Florida where they are the largest juice orange producer in the United States among other things.

King Ranch owned 10000+ acres here in S.E. PA They purchased it during the late 40s/early 50s. They turned all the farms they bought into pasture.Cattle were shipped from Texas and grown out here. They were then finished in feed lots that still exist today although not used for cattle anymore. It was quit an operation. It has been sold off now but one of the heirs still lives in the area on some of the property.

Toured the ranch last year and it was a wonderful experience. They have two levels of tours. One is a standard bus tour that is relatively cheap but does not get in close to the feed lots and crop areas. We opted for a private tout that includes narrated tour into the fields, feed lots feed mills, hunting areas, etc. Much more expensive but well worth the costs.

The Ponderosa was in/near Nevada I believe. We had an elderly neighbor that thought it(the tv show)was a true story. He always talked about the Cartwright Boys.

One thing that they don't advertise is the fact there are two pipelines coming off the ranch, one with natural gas and the other crude oil that pays a lot of the bills.

Andy, you are correct about the King Ranch in PA. I have worked many times at the estate doing tree work. The caretaker from the estate gave us the rundown. The moved there because of the railroad. He is directly from Ireland and works as the farm manager. He gets a house, 1 steer a year and electric and local phone calls. Works like a madman for I'm sure a small salary. I'll think of their name right after I type this I'm sure. It was not King, I do know that. Their house was a old stone house that's about a half mile from the road. It had a date stone in the top of the roof, over 100-150 years old. It looked like it had been there forever but was actually moved to the current location. They moved it stone by stone, numbered everything. It was an original stone house that was right along the road, which I believe is Rt. 82. I'd have to look that up also. They mainly seemed to be into racehorses now at the Pa. location.

What county is the King ranch in? One day a year when I sub for the Ag department classes are in the computer lab. There is a county in Texas that has less than 100 people. I was thinking it was King County?

If memory serves the King Ranch is in Kleberg County, Texas. Kingsville, Texas is on US Hwy 77 about 30-40 miles inland from Corpus Christi, Texas and is at the northern end of the King Ranch. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend that you get off the big hiway and go into downtown Kingsville to the King Ranch Store, you're probably not going to buy much as the prices are high for top quality merchandise but they have a working saddle shop and a lot of neat stuff to look at and they don't mind people wandering in and looking around. Back in the '90's I had the privilege to hunt quail on two separate parcels of the King Ranch.

The King Ranch is in Kenedy county. Sarita is the county seat.
