Update battery warmer

Temperature in pole barn this morning 19. Temperature inside warmer 46. Temperature of black battery 60. I'm using a 9 watt LED. Goes to prove LESs produce some heat and light energy is absorbed by black battery casr.

I'm happy with my experiment and so are my cordless batteries.

Plan to paint some rusty cooking pans black and metal line inside of cooler just in case of a battery fire. However I've yet to have issues with the Ni Mh batteries I use. I'm no longer a fan of NiCds or Li ions.
Nothing else the black metal might make it warmer.

Much of the heat produced by LED bulbs and fixtures is not produced by the LEDs themselves but by the power supplies inside the bulbs and fixtures.

always wondered about the heat output of a light bulb---if you have a 50 watt light bulb do you get 50 watts of heat or is some of that energy lost forever in producing light? or do certain lights transform that energy back when they strike an object?

Mark,
I used my laser IR thermometer. The chargers are the same temp as the air inside the cooler. The black surfaces on the batteries are warmer than the air temp.

I made a 30 ma trickle charger to keep 4 batteries topped off. So do the math, 120 ma and the battery voltage is 21.4 v would only produce 2.4 watts or .6w per battery. Don't really think that will make the battery that warm. The two dewalt charger shut down once the battery is fully charged.

I'm still convinced the LED's light produces heat to warm the air and the light energy, radiant energy, is being soaked up by the black battery. I could put aluminum foil over the battery and block the radiant heat.

Guess I'll have to measure the total current used here and post back.

Reguardless, I'm pleased this experiment works as well as it does using a 9 watt LED as my heat source. Not to mention it only uses pennies a day in electricity.

I started out using a 40w bulb and it didn't take long before the inside temp got to 100 and the batteries were even hotter. So I installed a thermostat that shuts light off at 88F.

Mark,
I removed the guess work.
Total watts 16.2
LED 8.8 w
3 chargers 7.4 watts.
Trickle charger 30 ma to 4 batteries.
Two dewalt chargers shut down batteries are full charged. Most of the 7.4 watts is heating air via the transformer used. It's mounted far from batteries. Best proof are the two batteries in shut down dewalt charger are warmer than the air, light energy is converted to heat.

Impressive, that 16.4 watts can keep batteries that warm in cold pole barn.
