Have a jd 2355 that leaks fluid out of the front wheel drive shaft seal of the transmission. Is that just a simple remove the drive shaft, take out the 3 bolts on the flange and replace the seal? And the O-ring for the flange? Thanks in Advance. Have always received good information from all of you.

Leaking inner or outer??? The outer is the planetary leaking and is more work, the inner is just a seal. The outer planetary usually has a worn spot on the input shaft and you will need to speedy sleeve it. The inner you can usually clean up by polishing it and just using a new seal. JD also had a service bulletin to use HYguard in the out board planetary. While being thinner it does not expand as much as gear oil and does not push out past the seals as bad.

It leaks all the hy-guard out of the shaft seal where the drive shaft hooks up to the shaft on the trans (im calling it the trans). There is a flange with 3 bolts holding it to the trans. It looks like i could remove that flange and replace the seal that im guessing the seal is inside that flange cover.Im not sure what the outer is and the planetary is.The planetary must be the gears inside. We half to refill with hydraulic oil as it all leaks out on the ground due to it leaking at the drive shaft output seal.Im sure it is 2 gallons low again right now just sitting. I'm not that familiar with tractors but have wrenched on cars and trucks. I wish i had a drawing handy. As i think about it,it may be a 2355.

Got to this site and put in your tractor info maybe this will help.

Tom the quill where the MFWD drive shaft quill(#31) is held with three bolts. You can remove it and replace the seal after removing the front drive shaft. In the parts diagram # 29 is the seal Part # 48M7038, Then you will also want to replace #28 Oring part # L33257. Watch and catch all #27 shims and put them back exactly like they come out, they set the end play on this shaft. # 30 is a washer make sure and put it back in.

You will need to drain all the hydraulic oil. I would clean the sump screen while I had the oil out.

This seal is not a common one to leak. It usually is the wheel hubs that leak. That is what I was talking about. Check and see if you wrapped something around the MFWD drive shaft as that is what usually takes out this seal. If you do not have all the shields in place do so when you put it back together. This area is low to the ground and a prime area for things to wrap if the shields are bad/gone.

Thanks JDseller and Ditchwitch. JDseller thanks for the reassuring information. i will try to get that cover off with out removing the shims but the heads up on the shims will be good to know. Yes, im sure there were weeds wound up in that area and the guards are not on.I will put them on if i find them. I cant thank you enough. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year to all.

If you can not find the shields make some out of smooth plastic pipe. You need shields on these shafts. Weeds/hay can wrap up real quick and ruin many dollars worth of parts.
