Affection For Mechanical Items

I am working on my old plow truck tonight, 1985 GMC K1500 4x4. We are expecting a large snowfall here in central MN. I have owned this truck about 20 years, it was my main road truck for years, now it never leaves the yard and is only for plowing snow. It is nicely optioned and has aftermarket accessories and wheels, etc. It was a very nice truck in it's day . I have owned a heck of a lot of trucks in my life, and I did a quick count just now, I currently own 13 trucks ( pickups and SUVs ) I think this old GMC is one of my all time favorites. Kinda funny, but I really love this old rig. It isn't the nicest, newest , most power full, best looking , most reliable or any of those things. I just really like the way it looks , sounds , drives. I like the interior and the coziness of a regular cab. I have felt that fondness for other mechanical items like tractors , motorcycles , and cars . I am sure some of you guys know what I am talking about. What is it for you ?

In my case I've had a 1974 F100 since new that to this day reminds me of a GF of that era, we put a lot of miles on it. GOOD times, both with the ex GF and 'wheeling with the truck!

Also had a '75 Camaro, also with a lot of good memories, wish I had never sold it.

And, I could go on, to me it's not so much about the make or model of the vehicle, just the good times associated with it.

I have a 1970 F100.302/4sp. No 'power' anything.Have newer,but the old Ford is a favorite.Will keep it forever.

Had more than one favorite, beautiful black 90 GMC and matching fiber glass topper sold it with 286000 miles. 1st car 64 Impala 2dr, 1st new car 76 Chevy Monza, 70 El Camino I generally hit something with it every time I drove it. 77 Corvette, lots of fun, nobody got hurt but probably missed several good chances, 69 Camaro SS. Only had a couple of cars I didn't like, the rest all had some good memories of some kind.

Blue 65 Mustang convertible, and the red 68 Mustang fastback. Either one would be a great find now.

'53 Cushman Eagle, '58 Chevy convertible my sister had and the Moline M 670 dad bought new in the '60's. Some of this had to do with the situations at the time.

The best deal I ever made on a vehicle was an 86 C20 that I bought from an estate. Had to jump through some hoops to get the title to it as the seller dropped the ball on that end. Finally did get the paperwork from the probate court in Duluth and got the title. It had about 45 K miles on it when I got it. It came with a 25' 5th wheel camper. I had to buy the package. Paid $4200 for it all.
Sold the camper and hitch right away for I think $2000 then drove the truck till it hit about 175K and sold it for $2500.
I put a clutch in it once and tires and brakes a couple of times. It was a great, reliable pickup and I still like that style.
It was the plainest pickup I've ever owned. Had an AM radio and NO other options.

1995 F-350 diesel 4x4. Bought it new right out of collage and still use it as my farm truck. Last year I redid the cab and installed an aluminum flatbed. Dad still has an 85 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 he bought new and uses everyday,he also has a 1996 F-350 4x4 in garage that has newer seen bad weather and has about 50,000 miles on it.

Super H,

Some people are in love with Harleys, I had a 650 triumph for many years and a Jag XKE. I've always loved Brittish Iron.

I grew up with Farmalls. I now have my late Mom's Farmall C. It's in great mechanical shape. I'm smilling when I using it to mow, push snow, and pull a dump trailer.

I used to have a 95 GMC pick up. It had some issue, but I could easily work on it. V6 with an engine compartment for a V8.

In late 2007 I learned it was the last year for the GMC classic body style. I went to a GMC dealer and he researched the internet for the GMC work truck I was wanting. He found one and I'll keep the truck running as long as possible, bending totalling it out in a major accident. I bought three of the largest tool boxes on the market at the time. My work truck is a tool box on wheels. I need to make repairs away from workshop. Most may not know, the classic body style are the last of the low riders. Most trucks today, the top of the truck bed is higher than the top of my tool boxes. I refuse to carry a step ladder to see inside my tool boxes and climb into truck.

So I hear you, sometimes we get attached to items and others think we are crazy. I feel the same way about terramites, just love what I can do with one that I couldn't do without one. I may be the only one on YT that thinks that way. Doesn't change the way I feel about them. A few years ago, I bought a second terramite. I got tired of transporting mine form my place in the north to the place in the south of the county.

I know what you mean. Those era GM trucks were good looking and handled nice. Just had terrible reliability ! The one I had pretty well ended me from EVER BUYING another GM product again !

Geo, below is a picture of the scooter I had until I traded for a used Triumph TR6 650 c.c. It was dangerous for a novice kid but I survived. The tappet covers kept vibrating loose and it leaked oil. Traded it for a Honda... then I realized I missed the Cushman and decided I'd buy a new one. But it was too late, they were no longer made.

Geo, I love my Triumphs too! We were in a dealership yesterday, wanted to drool over a Rocket 3, (2300cc) but they had sold their last one! The new Bonneville are 1200cc, Wow! I bought my first Triumph in 69, am currently driving an 09 Bonneville SE, 50th anniversary. 865 cc fuel injected, love it! These are just some pictures that I found, so I can drool in front of my computer! The bottom one is like mine.

Got a 1983 GMC Sierra. Diesel 4 WD. Need to work up the courage to go out and put the new starter in so I can get the snow plow on and do that job inside, instead of open tractor. But bench pressing that heavy starter up in there while laying on my back in an unheated garage just isn't very appealing. Really it hasnvt been a bad truck. Had it since '86.

My wife says, "Why do you say "Come on old girl" before you start all of this old stuff?"

Because that's what they all take to fire up, that's why! There's only a handful of things around here that don't get that treatment. It's cause they are young and stupid...

Bought the 38 GMC while I was in high school just took 35 years to get it restored. Had a 71 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 that was unstoppable that I wish I had kept and restored. The best car I had I finally sold a few years ago was an 83 Monte Carlo SS, I still see it.

Had a 66 Chevy 3/4 ton, six cylinder that bought from another farmer in 71. Hauled a lot of fat hogs to the sale barn in it. Love that style of Chevy. Drove it for 23 years till the cab was about to rust out and fall off.

I still miss my old 80 chevy pickup. Good solid machine and simple to work on. I just have to remember how worn out it really was when I got rid of it then I appreciate my new much less worn out truck more.

I bought a Dodge Little Red Express truck brand new in 1978 which I still own. Brought all 4 of my kids home in it. Certainly not the hardest working ,or economical, or comfortable truck I've ever had, but still my favorite. Didn't even come with air, which was ok, cause I like to roll the windows down and listen to them pipes talking to me every time I do anything with the throttle. Good memories.

to each his own ,,. I like my case tractors and Lincoln cars , however the warmth from my dear sara lady is what really makes my heart flutter

I know what you mean. Its just about 30 years ago this week I brought home my "new to me" 81 Sierra Classic. Spent the next week or two getting the ailing 5.7 diesel out and transplanting the 403 Olds gas engine. Many satisfying miles later I still like this old truck. (Almost as much as the Mercury). No salty winter road driving for it now though.

I know what you are talking about. I have lots of old stuff around here and can't seem to let any of it go. It's not worth much to anybody but me.

I not much of a Dodge guy, buy really liked those trucks "back in the day" and darned near bought one. Bought a '78 Blazer instead. Ah, MORE memories!

My moto has always been; never love something that doesn't love you back! I have broken that moto a few times and it has lightened the pocketbook way more than I would like to admit. Sometimes though it's refreshing to love something that doesn't TALK back!

I remember the Cushman eagle, slip clutch and two speed, shifter on left side of gas tank.

Wish I were younger and could ride again.

Had a '77 Ford Ranger F-250 "Trailer Special" (460 engine, C6 Trsnny, 2WD and 4.10 Rear End with High Country 12.50-35-16.5 tires). I just loved that truck, but high priced gas made me let 'er go back in 2005. My '95 F-150 4WD has been a great truck too, but Michigan salted roads are eatin' it up. (It's okay, I'm 82 now, so I guess I've had enough trucks).

purchased this 1952 Chevrolet from the original owners son 20 years ago. It had been covered with a tarp and stored in an enclosed barn for 17 years.

I think my favorite is Dads 44 2N,he loved that tractor ,5 years today since we lost him till we meet again.

I'd have to say its my old D19 Allis Chalmers its been my main backup for years when other tractors break down, won't start etc etc I can always fall back to the D19.
