Strangest thing

I went out about one thirty to take the bucket off the loader and put the spear on so I could bed cattle. I noticed the top pipe on a 16 foot gate next to the bunker silo, was shaking up and down. There were some cows standing there,so I thought one of them was rubbing on it or something. There wasn't. I walked over and got the 1600 out of the barn so I could get to the straw, came back and it was still shaking. I thought maybe the exhaust on the tractor was causing some kind of vibration,so I shut it off. The gate kept shaking.

I came in the house to get the wife to open another gate for me so I could get the straw in and I told her about it. It was still shaking when we got out there. It kept going from a vibration to shaking hard and back again. She came in and got the camera and shot some video of it.

I bedded two barns,it was still going. At one point,I couldn't see it shaking from a distance anymore, but when I walked right up to it,it was still vibrating. I opened it to put a bale of hay in the feeder and it stopped when it was open. As soon as I closed it,it started right back shaking again. I don't know if it's still going or not,but it's after three thirty now.

There isn't enough wind today to amount to spit. Light and variable would be the way to put it I guess. I don't know what's going on. I don't know if it's related to that low hum that I hear in the air most of the time or what it is. I told the wife that the ghost from the kitchen must be out there.

That's scary Randy.

We used to have windows vibrate in time with the Compressors over at the MichCon natural gas compressor station over 2 miles away.
But then the compressors were V8s with cylinders a man could stand in them. 4 for power, 4 for compression. Come to think of it, we haven't noticed that since we replaced all the windows on the porch with nice modern vinyl windows.

Maybe ghosts from down at the condensary?

Must be your fence wire? The powerline along the road between me and the folks place next door will hop up and down on a perfectly calm day. I figure its a vibration thing amplifying into a hop.

If a pipe was at a very critical temperature, it could heat and cool just enough to push and pull of the lower gate components to create a pattern of flexing. I have seen it with pans on a stove and other places at various temps. Interesting!!! Jim

Oh,nothing serious. I see things in my peripheral vision and feel a cold draft when there's no reason from time to time. Gives the wife the willys when I mention it.

Now see...I envision your wife looking at that gate and wondering if she should humor you or maybe check the expiration date on your meds...or both. Frigging weird, that's for sure. Puts me in mind of sitting on the sofa at the old house 35 years or so back. Something caught my eye and I looked over at the fish tank and the surface of the water was all churned up. Turned out we had a minor earthquake. Don't go on for extended periods though...so can't be that. I'm thinking you are picking up some belated result from the election. All the snowflakes at MSU, CMU and GVSU shaking in their boots. Seems to me you are kinda central to those three locations...some kinda of focused freak-out converging on your farm! Yup...no doubt...it's Donald's fault.

You did post a picture of your Essex Tri Directional?? Maybe you left it running? I though I was one of the few who seem to see things out the corner of my eye which are gone when I turn slightly to see.

I have seen a taunt wire vibrate in the slightest of breezes. Do you have a cable support from the outer end of gate to the top of the gate post??
Loren

Is there a power line near by? Had somthing like that at a company i used to service. Was a perfect harmonic and the power company added another insulator on the side of the building to change the length of the power cable. One Ford I had the soda and coffee with a lid on would sit in the holder would turn by themselves!!! Just a tiny vibration from the engine and it was like they were haunted. Only happend when the cup was a little less than half full. Stuff can get weird. Come to think of it..this summer I was walking out to the field behind my house and there were some weeds to the side. One of the leaves was waving to me! There was no wind, just the slightest of air moving almost like a heat convection. If you held a lit match the flame would not wiggle. As I said, things can get weird.

I have a 16 foot gate that does the same thing when it is really cold. Must have been down south and can't take the cold MN winters.

No cable. One end is on hinges, the other end was sitting on the ground. Two inch heavy gate, the upright bars are broken off from it being in a feedlot for most of its useful life.

I hear the hum too off and on; no ringing, just non-periodically a hum, drumming pretty low level noise in my head. You can put your hands over your ears and still hear it. Have a pipeline on the rear of the property and thought it was that till I called the pipeline company and it had been dormant for several years. Right now it's gone.

Ive read a story about cots in a aircraft hanger that would have voices coming from them. Turns out the bedsprings were picking up radio waves and making vibrations.

Someone was trying to tell you something. I've had instances where something wierd like that happens on this farm and later something falls off the jack or something else that could have been bad. I assume those things were to get me to be observant. There's a long line of documentation of odd things happening at my farm going back 100 years. Just tonight I had a visit while doing chores. The wife thought I was nutty until she had a very detailed experience this fall. No questions from her now.

No idea if it was related, but it happened while I was home between two funerals we had to attend. One at 11 for an old guy who was one of Dad's best friends, then one at 6 for my sisters first ex husband.

That's a hint right there, a 16 ft span is very flexible and what we call dead still air usually still has a velocity to it.

If you look at round cylinders in a wind they shed vortices behind them alternating side to side which is why wires etc sing or hum in a breeze. To be visibly shaking the wind speed likely just happened to line up with the natural frequency of the pipe.

Randy:

That's one of the things that can happen when you tell those little Gray Guys they can park their Saucer behind the Barn. All kinds of weird things happen when they're around. LOL

:>)

We have a gate that dose the same thing. It about 12' long three horizontal pipes and the top one vibrates. part of a pipe fence that surrounds the house
