remotes for overhead doors

We have three remote controlled garage doors and a total of 2 working remotes. One is a Sears, maybe two and other is lift-master which is Chamberlain. They are at least ten years old or more and everything works good except the remotes. I've put new batteries in non-working units with no results. Can I update to newer remotes without replacing openers etc?

I think the Sears Craftsman is also a Chamberlain. Two of mine are about 25 years old and still working without a battery replacement. The dealer/installer can sell you a remote but he will have to show you how to match the frequency of the controller to the opener. Mine may be so old that the remote is obsolete for replacement.

Need to know if your remotes have dip switches inside or if totally electronic. If the older dip switch type might be hard to find a replacement. Newer style most any of the universal ones will program to it by follow the enclosed directions.
If you pop the cover off like to replace batteries if you see a row of like 10 tiny (usually white)mini toggle like switches these are dip switches.

Open your garage door opener cover and check the worm drive gears. Thought my remote was not working and the plastic worm gear was worn out. My bad as your supposed to put grease on them occasionally. gobble btw I did have a remote go bad, replacement, identical, was available. My openers are also 20+ years old. gobble

My daughter's garage door wouldn't so they got a new opener. After I installed the new one, I said do you want me to get rid of the old one?? I took it home and took the cover off and the plastic gear was stripped. Got a new gear for about six dollars and now I have an opener for the door where my truck is parked

Open the cover. There should be a learn button. Once you get the new opener push the
learn button and then the button on the remote. This has worked on doors more then 20
years for me. If you have the dip switches this will not work.
Additional information we have a remote that opens our door and 2 other doors. As long
as there is enough distance an opener can be used for more then one door and not open
the others.

When we bought our house the door openers didn't work, even after I put batteries in them. I just had to reprogram them like Ohio88 said, hit the learn button and the button on the remote.

"Can I update to newer remotes without replacing openers etc? "

Yes, check out ebay auction #381592528800 for ONE reasonably-priced example. I have used a half-dozen or so of those, the last two of which I bought from that seller.

They are easy to connect... connect two wires to the terminals where a wall pushbutton would connect to the opener, plug into an outlet, and very simple to program.

Did you try reprograming the remotes? If not, you can get the information online or on Youtube.

Chamberlain and Sears are the same, or have been in the past.

If you do buy new remotes, they are color coded to the "learn button". Check the color, the remote will say which color it works with. It will still need to be programed when you get them.

Sears and Chamberlain are both very good about making their operator's manuals available online. Before buying new remotes, get your model numbers off the openers and look up how to re-link the old remotes to your openers.

Menards and lowes have the newer remotes with changing codes.

I have some old openers with 10 pin dip switches, that is a fixed code. Those remotes I have to buy off ebay or amazon.

The first thing I do when my remote clickers don't work is simply replace the battery. That fixes my problems.

(quoted from post at 14:24:51 12/16/16) Menards and lowes have the newer remotes with changing codes.

I bought a new universal remote from Home Depot and after lots of tries to get it programmed I went on chamberlain website and watched a programming video that solved my issue. It seems you have to hit the remote button up to 9 times to get the door to respond. The instructions that came with it didn't mention that. It's working like a charm now.

Thanks for all the help.

For not a lot of money $25-35 for a blue tooth receiver at Home Depot or Lowes you can control 2 garage doors off your cell phone.

The app is free. No worry on battery replacement and the whole family can control the doors.

For more than 2 doors add an additional receiver.

We have two doors with openers, both old enough not to have the safety lights on the door frame (1980's?) I have also replaced the drive gear on both of them. With seven vehicles in the family, we have lots of remotes. Several have three buttons, so the two openers are programmed for different buttons. I have found that the plastic case of the remotes get nasty after 20 plus years in the cars/trucks. I remove the battery and circuit board and run the other pieces through the dishwasher. A little brush/ air cleaning of the circuit board, especially around the micro switch, a new battery, and they work MUCH better.
