Got our old Massey to start better in the cold

We have a 3505 with a 354 Perkins that's always
been a brute to start in extreme cold . Being
plugged in with ether or without and with 2 good
testing batteries and with a new starter. We keep it
hooked to our generator in the winter so when we
need it it needs to start. What we did was pull the 2
batteries out of our combine and put them in the
cab and have all 4 connected in tandem. Those
extra rolls in bitter -40 wind chill makes or breaks
getting it running or not. We also run JD 5w30
torque guard and change the fuel filters every year
late fall. Makes the old girl worth its weight in gold
now during power outages and it frees up the newer
tractor for blowing snow.

Get an electric heat gun and stick it in the intake. My diesels start almost immediately when sucking in hot air.

Sure it would. When I was a kid, my dad used to use a diesel soaked rag on a wire, he took of the air intake pipe, it the diesel soaked rag, and stuffed it into the air intake, and voil? tractor would start.

If you want heat in the manifold, the Perkins in the 1850 and Whites had a glow plug for the plug in the intake manifold, not sure if you can get them yet.

Another trick was to plumb a petcock into the intake that you can turn on and off (dairymen always had one tractor with one, to use for vacuum for the milking machines when the power was out). Heat the manifold with a propane torch, and when you are ready to start it, open the petcock and direct the flame into it. As soon as you crank it over, it will suck out the flame and you'll have propane going into the manifold. You'll usually get a quick start. Close the petcock as soon as it starts, of course, because its a big vacuum leak.

Our old MH diesel has a manifold heater that works good they must have replaced them later on for Ethier canisters

Actually I bet the thermostart from one of the newer Masseys will fit in that same plug, the 399 has that here, just would need a fuel line to it and the unit and I see it on ebay for 12 US bucks. I might do that to my 2705, It is a little cold blooded also, DOT 4 engine.

That's what I do. I bought a industrial "hair dryer" heat gun and blow it in to intake when I have a hard starter. I live in North Texas so we don't get too cold here.

My Oman backup power plant has an intake heater. It looks like a couple of Champion spark plugs and does the trick!

(quoted from post at 10:09:32 12/16/16) That would work too when the powers on,would a
propane torch do the same trick?

It does, but it tends to suck the flame out. Heating the manifold will hep do the same thing, but you have to be real careful...FIRE!
