Regulars and F20s

When did the "Regular" turn into an F20? I remember sitting on my uncles F20 parked in the shed..it had the enclosed steering box and a steering wheel like the later M's. Oh, it also had a starter and I think lights. Leo

1931 or 32.The M style steering wheel is a replacement. Original was cast iron.Starter and lights were aftermarket. No electric
start was ever available for F20.However,you could get a 'light package' from the factory.

I know Hiesler made a 'kit' for f20.Had a special bell houseing and a ring was put onto the flywheel. They used a 'wilson' starter fron an early Chevy pickup.Did not IH ever offered it.The '20' I had had the Hiesler.

The mention of Heisler was a trip down memory lane! I worked in Harry's old factory office in Hudson, IA right at the end of Bonneson selling the Uni Loader to Case circa 1970 or so. My office had a nice view of the schoo yard across the street and I enjoyed watching "Recess"! Our company had an assembly line for the Uni Loader in that long building. The Hudson school now has the site for a highschool, but the west end still looks the same. We moved the equipment, including a 300 ton old press with about a 6foot diameter bull gear (open, of course) to the existing building east of the Waterloo airport on Big Rock Road...a building built to make jail cell needs, I am told.

Yes, I drove my uncle's Regular that had a Heisler gearbox. Leo

The later F20s had a steering wheel different than an M. The top photo is the original steering wheel on my late 37 F20. The bottom is the steering wheel of an M.

Not sure when IH replaced the Regular with the F-20 but my uncle had a Regular, bought new in 1927.

He updated it to F-20 "specs" somewhere along the line. It had a vertical exhaust manifold and a bit more HP.

He also added a FEL with hydraulic pump mounted between the clutch and transmission. It remained crank start.

He used it, along with his "big tractor," a 1936 F-30 with full round spoke rubber rims/tires, until he passed in 1986.

Harvester never offered electric start on the F-20. Heisler made the electric start kits with the hole in the clutch housing. See Todd Markles F-series originality guide.

I think 1932 was the year they crossed over, some Regulars were sold and some F20s were sold too, in 32. I have a 1927
Regular and I really enjoy it. It isn't good for a dang thing, but it is just fun to operate. It is primitive but very
cleverly designed at the same time, if that makes any sense. Mine will be 90 years old this coming year.

The book that is out on the f series says that IH never offered electric start on F series tractors. It was aftermarket by Heisler.

(quoted from post at 15:49:17 12/16/16) The book that is out on the f series says that IH never offered electric start on F series tractors. It was aftermarket by Heisler.

This is true, IH dealers were however
authorized to install Heisler kits on new tractors, thats why many people remember that they had a F20 with "Factory" electric start.
