1997 Ford f250L 4x4 not working

Does anyone have experience with the four wheel drive on these?. It's my very tired plow truck. Besides flat tires and a dead battery the four wheel drive isn't working. It's the switch on the dashboard system. I think I left it in four wheel drive when I parked it a couple of weeks ago but now the 4x4 light isn't on and only two wheel drive now.
Any possibility it's just a fuse??
And to keep this tractor related, the JD 2510 isn't getting the winter off till I get this fixed

Put it in neutral with your foot on the brake with the engine running, and switch it in to 4x4. Don't let off the brake or shift it until the 4x4 light comes on. See if that works.

I THINK it is vacuum actuated through a solenoid. If so just run a vacuum line up to the intake, will be full time though

I had a problem on my 2000 f250 diesel, best thing I ever did was throw the auto vacume lock hubs in the garbage, spent $200 for warn manual lock hubs, never a problem since i got them, get out lock the hub, get back out later unlock them, works for me.

My '02 has manual locking hubs as well. I just do it the old fashioned way if the switch don't lock in the front. If the transfer case isn't shifting: keep playing with it. The electronic shifting mechanism sometimes sticks if it isn't used enough to keep it from gumming up

I believe you have two vacuum lines running to the hub. If you jack up one side to get the tire off the ground and apply vacuum to one of the two ports it should apply. The other port releases the hub when vacuum is applied. You can use a hand vacuum pump for this.

Could be that the motor on the transfer case is not shifting it. I have had to replace a couple of them for that reason. Also note that the switch that illuminates the 4X4 light is part of that motor.
